  1. Can anyone tell me what type of knot is used for the braided knife scabbard. Has anyone attempted to make these with any success? If so can u explain your process thanks
  2. Anybody familiar with how to use the hansen string cutter beveler? My problem is...the instructions are vague rookie level stuff guys sorry
  3. It may be that its too hot like curlyjo said I live on the gulfcoast of texas and we have had 100deg days and at night its almost like its rained with the humidity I can hang my raw hide on the clothes line if im working nights and come home and it feels half decent enough to cut without doing much. The reason I split before sizing because I felt like the thicker parts of hide were too wet when thinner parts were just right so ill split stretch and do it again. If I could describe what my string looks like its flared on the hair side if u were to look at the lace from the front side....I too have noticed when I soap its gumming ill try other ways. I know I read a post where rgerbitz explained his process and alan bell mentioned to soap before casing to help moisture distribute evenly I may have mistaken that for a different step in the process but ill keep going I just wanted to get some ideas...2 yrs in the making and ive yet to braid anything because I cant cut decent steing. Cudos to those who manage to accomplish this feat. It still fascinates me and I yet to give up the only help I receive is what I read on here in the books and personal trial and error so its tough but that's what keeps the fire burning. Thanks to all who have helped

  5. After initial 1" cut split im ready to cut my final lace. Im using the hansen and when cuttingive noticed its putting more of a bevel than a straight cut. .ive waited til the string is almost too dry ..its acting like its too wet where it will squeeze between my guide and blade...so ive let it sit and dry long then continue and it cuts great ive applied saddle soap and let it case...is this still because my moisture isnt evenly distributed trougtout and I should case it longer? Any help would be great
  6. Thanks for the help..there tends to be experienced folks that sometimes find different ways to do things thoight there might be something outside of grants book that might be able to go by but ill stick with what works thanks guys

  9. I've previously inquiredknifed info on this before and I've received the Ron Edwards tutorial the instructions are hard to read its too small....are there any different knots anybody else has used to braid one? What size lace and thickness is ideal? Thanks all who help god bless
  10. Still for sale?
  11. Sounds like its too wet...I usually soap it before I case it so the moisture content evenly distributes throughout while its casing I'm still learning but as I've had more luck cuttin better string doing it this way hope it helps

    Rit Dye

How long can the rit dye mix last if it's left in a container with a lid at 3$ a pop I'd like to get more life out if it, is this possible
  13. At what pressure is ur pressure washer set to when ur defleshing, with a house full of little ones mama not so happy happy happy when dads out fleshing a hide
  14. Fantastic ideas, I'm also experimenting with different things to dye my rawhide with I'd like to stick with natural ways of dying them ie: purple onions, beets, etc rather than the rit dyes I like to do things the old fashion way
  15. Wow, thanks everyone for all the advice, I just had a Hansen string cutter ordered for me so the fun begins
  16. Yeah but what? That's the dilemma what can bring money and sell from both genders I've been primarily making knife scabbards I've yet to dabble in anything else
  17. Anybody familiar with the steps to preparing the tallow conditioner for dressing rawhide and if its used while braiding or if it's just to "weatherproof" the finished product
  18. If that was my line of work boy those sure are great ideas all I do is braided work. But I may get a buddy to do something also haha like u said a lot of people will see this and I think it's a good opportunity for him since he's a little more seasoned thanks everyone for the advice
  19. Well considering my level of craftsmanship it's not gonna be a wall hanger by any means haha it's to be donated for auction so i guess whoever bids on it all proceeds go to winner I'm not sure...but it's an auction item is what I'm asked to make if that helps
  20. Jan 1st is deadline I need some quick project ideas for a ranch rodeo donation I was asked this evening and it would be my first project of this nature any help would be great
  21. Referring to the blades used for a splitter I have seen planer blades that could possibly work. how would these work in a splitter design similar to the Hansen? If not can anyone point me in the right direction of blade choice
  22. Sounds good, working that rascal on a stretching frame fresh off the hoof I'm assuming that's after or while defleshing? Does the amount of flesh left on play a big part in how fast that rot could have set in? Or just cause that's the nature of the beast that's what happens to dead skin it rots no matter how much flesh is on it. The person I got it from was in a rush to get the hide off so a lot of meat was left on. So after I get it on stretching frame I'll de flesh at that point correct
  23. Thanks brad for the response Im a new father so I wasn't able to pull it out of neutralizing solution after the 24 hr period so it was more like 3 days, well like I said earlier it was pretty foul, I would have tried to save what was left of the flank if I could but as I washe it off and started to set it up to stretch the hide pretty much disenigrated it was good towards the middle but left me with little to nothing. I guess the rot had set in pretty good? I'm not sure that's a first for me but anyways better luck next time thanks for the response though
  24. ANY help or advice before I scrap this would be excellent ladies and gents thanks to all
  25. Well I guess I left the hide in there too long it's now got a strong stench to it. Is this the sign f a ruined hide or can it be salvaged I read on old threads it's pretty much done but before I trash it can it be saved?
