  1. Now ive never done this myself so im speaking from a 2nd hand source. I recently talked with a gentleman who said it dry rots it by breaking down the fibers...he does rawhide braiding and saddle cleaning with over 20yrs experience. For what its worth
  2. Yessir that picture posted was 1 day, day and a half into it so I scraped more than whats pictured and that nice color has showed on 90% of the hide. The only thing I can explain were the "blister" bubbles on the flesh side....thank u for the response
  3. This is my second hide to do and from what I read this is what its supposed to look like. If u notice the black spots are the hair on the other side which is no problem. I feel like i should have shaved it to help it slip better we had a few cold spells in texas so that could be why too. I also ran into something i didnt notice on ny first hide. On the flesh side there were a few spots where it looked like it had blistered like air pockets i disnt know if this was a cause for concern or not. I still have some more scraping in some areas but im happy with the way it turned out. If anybody has any advice they could share just by looking at it as to whether I could have done something different please share. If it looks good that would be good to hear also just so I know what to expect from a good hide. You might not be able to make that assumption until u braid with it to determine if its good or not but all in all im happy with it.
  4. Well an update on the hide so I took it out last night to dehair it...this was a 100% angus bull and it was in the lime for about 2 weeks we had a mixture of cold to warm days. It was alot harder to remove the hair from this bull than I remember from my last hide. I scrubbed on it as hard as I could but it just wasnt working out Ill have to dry scrape later. I cut a few corners i was pressed for time and only rinsed one side real good before I threw it in my vinegar solution so well see how it comes out ive seen alot of differences in. The hides already as far as age and sex are concerned its only my 2nd hide to do but its pretty noticeable thanks everyone who replied with their help
  5. How long is too long
  6. Can a hide be damaged for leaving it TOO long in the lime mixture?
  7. Thanks all who replied...i kept it simple and just rendered what i jad if i choose to add beeswax later can i melt my tallow (which is in a mason jar) in hot water and melt beeswax seperatley then add it and mix it later? How do i store it? I reckon in the fridge but im a newbie at this...so this is NOT a braiding soap only a maintenance product or post braiding applicant
  8. Why the yellowish stuff? Is it for color reasons or contents of what the fat has absorbed? I had the hide from a bull given to me and they said they went to the store and got tallow from local meat departments to mix with the bull meat because it was too lean so thats what we plan on rendering down tonight. Can i just render it down and add soap or beeswax later And mix it then? Or do i need to use anything at all and just the tallow...for future maintenance care and to use it while im braiding
  9. Will any beef fat work? Why is kidneyfat preferred?
  10. Excellent thank u so much
  11. I live in West Columbia TX 45 min south east of houston. Does anybody know if any rawhide workers who would be willing to share a little knowledge. Thanks to all who reply
  12. I have the Hansen and I too love the cutting side of it but wish I could get more consistency with the splitter. wish there was more surface area. I tell ya if you live in high humidity or keep your cutter outside, make sure you keep it lightly oiled.
  13. I appreciate the responses: kh: I do not have either book of Ron Edwards if I knew what was in it preview the book I wouldn't mind purchasing. Cr: thank u for the link I'll look into it
  14. Ive posted a similar question several times...anybody out there know the pattern to a braided knife scabbard? And how to adjust to the different length of knives? Kinda losing the fire here got no tutor or hands on training....only so much u can pick out of books 3 yrs and aint got a damn thing to show but rawhiding tools and scraps everywhere...maybe simpler projects might stick if not...ill have a hansen cutter for sale pretty soon
  15. Rc after I looked at it again I figured I could do exactly what u are describing I just didnt if it would work. Im guessing a single punch would work to punch in between the first 2 stitch holes skip the 2nd and 3rd then punch between the 3rd and 4th stitch hole...we'll see how it goes and ill post pics...thanks for all who responded. Tom This is a braided edge im doing and removing the machine sewed stitching but thanks for ur help
  16. So is this pretty much going to be a no go? Is that what ur saying?
  17. Recently got a knife whos sheath is a little bland. I want to remove the thread on the edges and do a spanish edge lacing. Is this possible. Surely it can be as simple as cutting the current thread enlarging my holes for my rawhide and lacing it? If anybody can help thad be great. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum Josh
  18. What thickness do u shoot for with your working gear. Mainly the quirt.
  19. It was really cool. Its aggravating (probably the wrong word to use) more inspiring to see him do it with such ease and precision he makes it look simple.
  20. How does the fine tuning work? Since it does resembke the hansen which is what I own....its self explanatory obviously but how much of a benefit is it. Im having a hard time explaining what im trying to ask but ill post anyways and hope someone can understand what im asking.
  21. Yeah its just crowded because my 8 strand round braid covers my core good so its just bunched up maybe a good role will help...its my first project and it looks horrible but ill post pictures when I can figure this phone issue out. u gotta start somewhere I guess
  22. For whatever reason my phones not allowing me to upload these photos....its a new phone and I dont own a computer but if someone can just explain how I would ad an interweave that would be great...if I can describe my problem its acting like theres not enough room meaning I have no gaps to fill so should I have dropped my working strands into the core or should I have built up on my core where I wanted to add my interweave?
  23. Yes im trying...im at work and for whatever reasons its not working it says website unavailable...but ill try when I get home
  24. So I want to throw in some extra color on my failed attempt at a quirt. But its not working. Like too many strands looks bunched up will it look better when I roll it? I want to throw it in the middle of my handle forwhatever reason pictures wont load. Any advice
