  1. You guys are awesome. I have shaky hands and I'm always messing things up. I have a ton of painters tape around here, some self-amalgamating tape that sticks to itself and is rubbery when it 'sets' and who knows what else I have I would never have thought of. Thanks Ken. Cheryl

  2. There is no regulation in almost all of this. There are a few groups that are trying to get some standards, but pretty slow sledding here in the US.There is sure an art to leather and then the mechanics of doing things with leather.

I have heard Leather Artisan, Leather Craftsman (person?), Leathersmith, and probably a few others if I thought a little more. Then you can self-add the adjective "master" to these too without a lot to back that up. Some people work in shops and others work in studios. Mine has a roillup door and you used to be able to park a truck in it so it is a shop by my reckoning.

It may be a garage but you create art Bruce, I've seen it. And people will talk (referring to the writing forum) that you have to follow basic mechanics of writing so it's a craft. Well I think Van Gogh (maybe a bad example :-) had to follow certain mechanics of the craft in order to create art. But who could look at Starry Night, done from looking out his window of an institution and say it was a MH craft?

I wish there were standards although how you'd set them I don't have any idea. Then I'd know when I'd moved up from noob to nobody and beyond.

  3. Cheryl,

The last message I had from you was that you couldn't do anything until June 3rd and I don't have anything quite that wide right now. The largest slot I have right now is short of 1-1/2" in anything older. I bought a small set with some wider punches that may be at the post office today and could have one in there. One of the 1-1/2" for sure is a trace punch, but she described some that are regular slot but wasn't sure of the sizes . I'll know more tonight if they came today. I'll email tonight either way. I will also let you know exactly what the Dixons measure. One option for slots also is to use a shorter punch and overlap the previous punching to make up a longer length.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

I'm sorry I did this in the forum Bruce, but I did want to catch you since I get my check tomorrow because the 3rd is on Sunday. I didn't realize that when I said the 3rd. I would NEVER have thought of overlapping. I've had people ask me why not use a hole punch on the ends then cut between them. Usually when they see my ability to cut that answers their question. So that will be fine Bruce. Would you suggest the Osborne 1 & 1/4th or even one of the smaller ones, maybe an inch? Or one of the Dixons? I don't care as long as it punches whose name is on it. You can just tell me tonight in the email, and price and shipping. Thanks Bruce. Cheryl

  4. You are the hardest man to pay I've ever seen. I saw the oblong punches on your site. I have contacted you 5 times about a 1 & 1/2 inch (OK one was an apology for calling so early, which is why I haven't called since, I'm way too embarrassed).

I don't care who made it, or used it, I like vintage tools and I will leave it up to your expertise to pick one out for me, as long as it's 1 & 1/2 inch. If you would give me a price I'd be ever so happy to pay you tomorrow. Thanks Bruce. Cheryl

  5. As someone who's still in the situation Sylvia's trying to pull out of, I was offended by Harvey but for about 5 secs. He always has the option of not reading what I write. I've received so much help on here that without it I'd be out of business and I'm not even completely started yet. I don't really get bothered by people who don't understand some of us don't have a Tandy store, and couldn't afford the costs of a project if we did. $3.00 scraps? LOL that shows how long it's been since someone bought scraps. I was fortunate enough to have a good person on here send me scraps, and a lot of other things too. I'm in a better position now than then so I'm sending things to a kids summer camp. It's all one big circle for me, you get help, then you give it. All of this being said I still don't want Pete to quit posting. I think there's room for all of us here, we noobs and the learned folk. Has to be with the vast number of posts that could be searched if anyone could figure out how :-) Cheryl

  6. I'm with Sylvia on this. I have talked my neighbor through 'copy and paste' at least 10 times; her computer is way nicer than mine but that doesn't mean she knows how to use it. And she still likes for me to be on the phone or in her apt. when she does it. Is it frustrating? Yes, but I don't tell her to go and use Microsoft's search function to remind herself. That place is huge, and Pete really to someone starting out so is this. If you find you are losing your patience just don't answer those questions for a while. Because they are important to the person asking them. Cheryl

  7. I'm going to say this for the 12, 094 time and have yet to have anyone correct me but for that matter agree with. I know the feel you are going for. I use Vt's Original Bag balm. I figure if it's good enough for the live cow it's good enough for the dead one. it's the last step I do. I spread in on pretty thick, use a blow dryer on med for about 15 seconds to turn it liquid, and get in there and rub it in with my hands. Actually it's my favorite step. I love the way the leather feels with it on, and you get that limp soft look you are looking for. after I'm done, I let it dry overnight and if there is any excess left I rub it again with my hands, then take a clean cloth and wipe it off. It does not darken the leather either. I've used it for a year on things from straps to a camp stool seat I made. But I mean the really FINAL step, after you've put a coat of resolene or saddle sheen or whatever on it. Give it a try, doesn't have to be VTs and it's so cheap it's ridiculous compared to other conditioners. Cheryl
