  1. Hi guys

how can you stop the scuffed bit of leather soaking up more dye than the surrounding un-scuffed leather...... as you know, scuffed leather soaks up more dye, more readily than leather in good condition, so was wondering does anyone know of a way to still use the scuffed stuff and being able to get a reasonably even coar of dye on it?//

    if that makes sense

    thanks

  2. Hi guys

sorry for not getting backing sooner but our household has been down with a nasty stomach bug over the last couple of weeks so not done much, but

have now played a little with the Isopropyl myristate, firstly i wiped some onto a finger of an old pair of leather gardeners gloves, they were rock hard and left them for 20mins, there is a definite softening of the leather, also applied to a cut off piece of veg tan which was soaked in hot water and left to harden, again seems to have an improvement too. I do need to be a little more scientific with the tests and will be on the next round, but a bit busy now catching up. also need to assess whether or not there is any interference with adhesion of pigments or dyes applied to the leather after treatment.......according to some people in the trade, it works well, but as yet i don't know if it works better than neatsfoot or not.

  3. i repair furniture for a living and have been looking to find out what the industry uses to make the expensive products that we have to buy, i am part of a few trade forums and found this on there, some swear by it, but I until now haven't followed up, so bought some cost me £20.50 for 1ltr delivered in UK.

i have now bought and used neatsfoot on veg tooling leather works well, but wouldn't use it on furniture for worry about it effecting the finishes. so when the Myristate arrives later this week will be playing, already have some old leather to use on and a knee patch taken off motorcycle leathers that has been through a washing machine and gone rock hard, so should be a good test, will let you know

  4. thanks guys

yes that's what i looked at when someone brought it up on another forum, ce without a doubt for anything made and especially sold as a toy.

often with our regulations over here, they can often be open to interpretation, until its acted upon in court and a precedent is made. part of the products group is recreational crafts. which could leave it swinging a little? definitely worth considering these possibilities i thought whilst were busily making our wares......?

i don't know if anyone has ever been in trouble with this or even if anyone would, but probably worth keeping in the back our minds. just my thoughts....

  5. Have you used Neatsfoot oil?? It may be greasy on my hands for a bit, but I've never had it leave my work feeling greasy. EVOO is a good alternative in a pinch, but a lot of people have experienced increased mold with it, so use sparingly.

errrm, no haven't tried.....as said new to carving etc, and as i guess most do, I've been reading everything i can find on the subject. and read somewhere nf can cause some probs? from greasy (maybe using too much? don't know to going off and smelling? again don't know) then i read about some repair guys using the above and thought, interesting, wonder if any else here has tried....

  6. thanks, fortunately i don't don't suffer any more, had them moved into one of my campervans once, little darlings ate my wiring and blew up my lights :ranting2: took me ages to get them to move out, bought farmer strength persuader but they just kept eating it, was half expecting to find a note from them asking where my supplier was.... ... anyway same as most looking for some where to play properly, was thinking about garden shed, but definitely not now as i know they hang out down there in big gangs :bawling: ...scary......
