Messy stitches on cobbler only when stitching to the right
arich replied to arich's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thank you for your help! I buffed the plate and when doing so I noticed the screw holding it down was very loose. Tightened that up, buffed the plate, messed with the tension a bit and redipped the foot in plastic dip and it seems to be much better -not perfect but usable. -
Messy stitches on cobbler only when stitching to the right
arich replied to arich's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Still looking for a solution! @Wizcrafts do you have any wise words on this topic? I had dipped the foot in plastic dip to keep the foot when gouging the leather, I have now removed the plastic dip and notice less messy stitching when stitching to the right however I do notice my stitch length gets shorter when stitching to the right. Are there adjustments that can be made to fix this issue? *Also I do need the plastic dip (or another solution) on the foot to keep my leather from getting chewed as I’ll be sewing painted leather on to shoes. Thank you! -
arich started following Consew 255 needle & thread size, Messy stitches on cobbler only when stitching to the right, Is an Adler 30-1 the right machine? and and 3 others

I’m just getting going with an Adler 30-1 that I picked up a while back. I’m noticing that the stitches look a little messy when pointing the foot to the right. All other directions are even and there’s no mess of stitches on the underside of scrap. (I’m using thinner thread in the bobbin) Is there something I can adjust? *Also can anyone recommend what oil is best for this machine? - My white diamond universal oil seems like it might be too thin (lots of leaking) maybe this is normal?

I came across an Adler 30-1 that I’m planning to take a look at it over the weekend. I’m fairly new to patch machines & have a few questions- I plan on using this machine to stitch painted leather pieces (5-7 oz veg tan) onto shoes (like Vans & Converse -on the toes & sides) Do you think this is the right machine for the job or would another machine be better suited? Would I need to make any modifications? Should I be concerned about being able to find parts for this machine if needed in the future? It’s a long arm machine with the wheel on the side -I know these machines are big, do you think it will be an uncomfortable reach when stitching? Do you find yourself using the hand crank to stitch or mostly just the pedal? Does the motor look correct? Should I be concerned about that little foot pedal? It was $1600, now $1250 does this seem fair? And finally are there any questions I should ask before driving out to look at it? & what should I do to test out the machine? thanks guys!

I finally made it out to look at the machine a few days ago. I brought my 138 thread and a bobbin and some leather to test it out. They had recently acquired the machine and weren’t very familiar with how to work it. I did my best to thread it (using a YouTube tutorial) and try it out but my bobbin was too big for the machine and they didn’t have an empty bobbin. They had thread in the bobbin but they didn’t have thread at the top spool so I had to make do with my 138 thread in the top spool and their very thin thread in the bobbin. I tried to adjust the stitch length but didn’t have much luck, looks like the tension was off, not to mention I was using two different thread sizes. The stitching was messy but not tangled (see pic below) Now today they contacted me and said they got ahold of the cobbler they had purchased the machine from, the cobbler was able to teach them how to adjust the stitch length (over the phone I’m guessing). The stitch length looks good now (see pic) but they say the tension is off so I can’t see how the machine runs with thread in it. If I purchase this machine I am planning to take it in to get serviced but I’m wondering if it’s worth the risk of purchasing the machine and the issue being something more than just the tension being off. Any opinions on this?

Oh no the shoes were bought then I painted & added the leather pieces

Thank you for your responses! Where do you purchase your needles Wizcrafts? By “patches” I’m referring to less traditional patches -like the shoes below. This is a pair I added patches to a while back. I was able to turn the shoe inside out and stitched them on with my flatbed Consew. I’m looking to add these kind of patches to other shoes (that I won’t be able to maneuver or turn inside out) on my current machine. Do you feel the Adler 30-7 is suitable for this sort of project? Or would a Singer 29k (or some other machine else) be a better bet? Constabulary is there anything else I should be on the lookout for when I go to try it out?

Just starting to look into buying a patcher machine. I'd like to use this machine to sew leather patches on things like backpack pockets and shoes. I don't think I'd ever need to sew anything thicker than 6-8 oz with this machine. I'm not ready to invest in something like a Cobra or a Cowboy but I'd like to avoid the Chinese patch machines. I'd like it to use 138 thread (if possible) and to stay under $1000 -a used older machine is fine as long as parts are somewhat available. What are some machines I should look for? -Also a local guy is selling a Adler 30-7 machine for $1000 that's supposed to be in good working order, is this a machine I should look into?

I'm specifically looking for swivel snaps/hooks in antique brass like these, made of solid brass or another strong metal -not zinc alloy. Buckleguy has what I'm looking for however the price seems a bit high. I'm wondering if anyone knows of another source?

It makes no difference. It didn't come with a manual but I have looked it over online -it wasn't much help

First off thank you guys so much for your time! I followed step by step (several times) but I'm not seeing much difference. On the left the needle tension was as loose as could be and the right is as tight as I could get it. Do I maybe need to adjust bobbin tension? I haven't touched it at all, it hasn't been messed with since before I purchased it so I'm not sure why this would be the issue but it's all I can think of

Okay I will give that a try! About half the people said do not wrap around the pin while the other half said to. Hopefully this will solve the issue...

Totally new at this sewing machine thing! I just bought a Consew 255 last week -I tested it out before purchasing it and it worked great. Now that I'm home I can't seem to get the tension right -lots of looping on the underside. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I'm pretty certain I've threaded the machine correctly. I've tried tightening the top needle tension as tight as possible tried sewing then loosening it out and no luck

Just brought home my first industrial! It's a Consew 255 and I'll be sewing about 1/4" (sometimes a little more) tooling leather The manual says up to #8 left twist thread however I don't see either of these when I search for thread to purchase. What is the best to use? I like the look of thicker thread Also- do I need triangle point needles for sewing leather?

Servo but no reverse -not sure I like the look of reverse on leather
