Ordered a hide and i cant use it for tooling since it has been oiled. Is there anything i can do to it, to make it suitable for tooling again????

I have some oil tanned/dyed. I'll experiement and see if I have a solution for you... might mean you'll have to buy a new bunch of tools though.
-
thank you sylvia! i wonder if they ll cost more than a new hide
-
Might pyrography work? Maybe you can burn decorations on. Will be stinky, this is an 'outside method', and a respirator might be a good idea too.

That just hurt thinking about that. Good thing I wear gloves when I work with stuff - too many nicks and cuts to want to feel that.
-
come on guys! dont be so whiny! there hardly is any pain if lemon juice gets in a cut.
-
It reminded me of when I used to work in a box plant and got all kinds of paper cuts. We used to use this liquid bandage stuff - OUCH!!!!

40$ to ship 10 yards of nylon strap......kill me.

that would be fantastic! make sure you spread the word

I think one of my most brilliant ideas about leather was to steal my sister's lab equipment! These pasteur pipettes are awsome for mixing dyes!

Just like my glass eyedroppers I found in the drawer - Perfect!

Thats how I do it too. By Counting drops and then a label on each of the jars...
-
That's what I've always used, too. The disposable polyethylene ones have measurements marked on them, they're super cheap, and they last forever.

i so dont like working under pressure....but i guess i ll have to today....

I only know because I'll be doing the same thing in about an hour. I'm dying to get an order finished so I can do some practicing of different techniques I really want to try out
-
well that sounds nice! im taking a break otherwise i ll kill someone. Why do leather disasters always happen to me?
-
You'll get there. I think you're just stressing too much. Remember, this should be fun!! There are plenty of dead animals out there to try again

Any finish that's rubbed on (vs airbrush) will remove some dye. The best you can do is to vigorously buff any loose pigment before applying the finish and then apply your first thinned coat very gently to create a protective layer. From there, buff it again after that dries and then add a couple more coats of thinned finish.
-
Thank you all! I ll see what i can do....but i dont have an airbrush...sadly.
-
That's ok. Just do that gentle light coat after buffing and you should be fine. it will pick up some pigment, but not enough to ruin your project.

I need to get a stitching horse if i want to keep all my fingers....
-
Did that awl get you? I nailed myself with the harness needle the other night. Blunt tipped needle right in the finger. My wife's making my put a first aid kit next to my bench
-
I got stabbed with a needle too.....went right through the other side of my thumb. @#$%#@!!!!
-
OUCH!!! Mine didn't go that far!!
