The big factors in having these bags hold up is the shape and the wax that was melted into the flesh side, lending both rigidity and waterproofing. Having them securely mounted also reduces the flex.

It is possible that there is no other colour there other than black, we may just be seeing reflected light as the white in the lettering looks like reflected light to me.

This is an excellent starting point and you'll learn a lot of technique regarding angle, pressure and movement of the blade when sharpening. If you decide to move into "stones" and you have the money, diamond lapping plates are great. Norton Abrasives sell some good combination stones (up to 4K/8K grit IIRC), higher than this you're moving into Japanese water stone territory that REALLY cost $$$$. No matter what stone you move into (if you do) you will need some way to keep the stone flat, the plate of glass covered in some 600 grit emery cloth (add water to move the slurry) will flatten your stones without removing loads of material. Note: hard stones will last longer but take much longer to sharpen a given tool when compared to a similar grit stone of softer composition.

Decent strip of leather (not too thin, but not something that will turn spongy either) Glue it down to a good bit of light timber (should be cured and unlikely to warp). I give the grain a VERY light sanding with 600 grit (something for the compound to sit in). I use 0.5 micron diamond honing compound (grease based) that I apply sparingly and moisten periodically with neatsfoot oil.

Interesting, the paraffin wax here (Australia), is actually HARDER than the bees wax. Hence my question about the liquid paraffin.

The "ejection rubber" is just that, it is ment to "eject" the cut item from the die rather than having to pop it out from behind or with some tool there by marking the die cut item.

Yeah, hot dipping in a suitable wax would be one of my choices, the second would be something like a liquid paraffin bath. Maybe a mix of wax and the liquid paraffin?
