My First Moccasin With The Welted Method
ebdavison replied to PattiN's topic in Shoes, Boots, Sandals and Moccassins
These look quite nice. What kind of leather did you use for the uppers? I made a pair with veg tan which was pretty easy to work with but is not as soft and comfortable as I would like. DId you use chrome tan? oil tan? What is the proper choice for these sort of mocs? Also, did you use pre-stained leather or did you dye your own? -
Do you have a list to the post with the Fred Moreau pattern? I tried to search and came up with nothing. Thanks.

Definitely a nice piece! What do the edges of the triangle measure in inches?

I actually made a pair of boots using the seamlyne design. I posted my pics in another forum posting: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=47597. Check them out and let me know what you think.

Thanks, Nigel for this excellent video. I am truly inspired by all of your videos; you are an excellent teacher and produce some fantastic goods. I am gonna steal the idea for your stitching pony/work surface; just love it.

Construction photos are on my flicker: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ed-davison/sets/72157633316920193/ As to the veg-tan leather? What made you correctly conclude veg tan? That they stand up by themselves? Well, the reason is pretty simple. Beginner with little experience. The directions call for leather and I had a budget and what I could afford and thought I needed was veg tan. I would actually love to do these again when I have more capital for a personal project with oil-tan buffalo. I found some sweet leather that would be great. I have never worked with chrome tan but is that the stuff that is normally considered for this sort of work? As to comfort, they would most likely be much more comfortable with oil-tan or possibly chrome tan (no experience with this at all) but the more I wear them the more comfortable they get. The veg-tan will last well and the break-in period should be endurable. I will have to let you know as time goes on how the break-in turns out. The buttons are from conchos.com and they have great customer service (and currently have free shipping promotion going on).

See above for link to more photos of the process. I can take more detailed photos soon and upload them. I had no idea classes were offered in this. Please post a link or details on this class.

After 4 months (45 hours total) and 1900+ stitches (ouch, my hands hurt at times), I have finished my renaissance faire-style boots. Any and all feedback is welcome. I can post more pics if anyone wants to see any of the details. For those that are interested, the directions (and excellent guidance) came from http://www.seamlyne.com/design/costume/footwear/footwear_index.asp.

Just an update. Wanted to share the before and after for my boots. Putting the final touches on them now but here is the before turn and after turn photos. Ed

I suppose you could call the boots mocs. They are the kind that lace up the side with buttons or conchos and the pattern is made by taping the foot/leg and cutting it off. Do I need to then condition the leather after having them be wet? What sort of treatment do you normally apply after your turn your mocs or turnshoes? Ed

I have a pair of boots that I am working on and they are currently inside out as I had to stitch the upper to the sole. Now I need to turn them right side out and just cannot get them to turn at all. The leather is 3-4 oz. veg tan for the upper with a 5-6 oz veg tan sole. Can I get the entire boot wet and then turn them? Is the leather going to be harmed if I do this? I know they will definitely be easier to turn and there is usually a texture change when I get the leather wet but is there any other downside to doing this? Thanks in advance.

I know it has been quite some time since this was added originally, but the file has been deleted. Anyone have a patter to share in place of the missing original?
