  1. I put black thread on top and red thread in the bobbin. The stitching does not show dots of red on top, nor does it show dots of black on the bottom. On the bottom there's just a little divot of the waxed canvas between each stitch. Is this what it is supposed to look like? My manual is a digital copy of a photocopy of a photocopy. The pictures are so terrible that I really can't tell visually how the thread should be routed. I just try to follow the text description and hope I'm right.
  2. My machine - Consew 206RB - came with size 92 nylon thread so I started out with that. Thinking that nylon is a bit wiry, I switched to polyester and am none too impressed. It shreds. Do I have to wax it all by hand? With waxed canvas, which in my case is 10.1 ounce, is it possible to get a stitch line that is balanced on both sides? I have never achieved that, but I think I got closer with the nylon.
  3. This topic is going to be worth printing out for my notebook. Thanks, Tom.
  4. I am NOT the expert on these matters, so I'm anxious for one of the experts to reply here. However, when I look closely, I think I see bobbin thread being pulled out of a hole and across by top thread. That makes me wonder if there's a tension issue going on. This is the type of problem that I can foresee having to deal with myself, so I'm chiming in here with you for a definitive answer from someone.
  5. Are you leaving the needle in the material while you perform the turn?
  6. Does this drying-out occur with both nylon and polyester thread?
  7. Wholehearted thanks to you both. I just bought a C.S. Osborne 3/4-inch round punch on eBay. Someday that sharpened-pipe idea may prove to be handy, especially for a larger washer.
  8. I need to reinforce a large snap on waxed canvas. It's large mainly for looks, but I'm afraid it may pull through the waxed canvas. The washers will show so they can't be irregular in shape. I've seen this done by someone else - a link to their page is given below. Are leather washers available commercially, or is there a way I can make these myself? http://shop.strawfoothandmade.com/product/lined-shoulder-bag-chestnut
  9. I will grind that edge. Holding tails works except where there are none - for example, when turning a corner with topstitching. Then there's just a big fat square edge.
  10. Thanks so much! It's a relief to know that this is an ordinary problem with a simple fix, and not something horribly wrong with the machine or the operator.
  11. Sometimes when I'm sewing through several layers of waxed canvas, a few stitches in from the starting edge, the trailing work edge will hang up at the rear of the needle plate's nfeed dog slot. All forward movement of the material stops and stitches pile up. If I can get the material to move just a little bit more, the trailing edge gets past the rear of the slot and doesn't catch there any more. Is this caused by too much presser foot pressure? Picture attached.
  12. No, I haven't tried any glueing yet. Can't find Barge cement locally. Does the solvent treatment help quite a bit with adhesion?
  13. That's excellent information and I am very grateful to you. I thought I was being silly using a stapler (and hoping for another option). 1/4-inch staples barely hold, though - are you using 3/8-inch staples? Do you "heal" the holes by applying extra wax such as Martexin Wax? What about using Barge Cement to hold narrow hems in place before stitching? Does that work?
  14. Is there any kind of glue that can be used for "basting" waxed canvas?
  15. The machine has just come home from Ralph's Industrial Sewing Machines in Denver, where they replaced the hook mechanism. I've not yet had a chance to try it, but I do trust that things will be better.
  16. I sew really, really slow, at the slowest setting of the servo. And I haven't done much of it because I've had so much trouble with the tension. Maybe there is something wrong with the machine.
  17. Is it normal to get a noticeable amount of lint in the tension discs? It's the same color as the thread I'm using. There is lint in the top thread discs as well as the discs for the bobbin winder. This is a Consew 205RB-3, and the thread is polyester, size 92.
  18. That's a familiar scenario. I can't wait to find out what causes it.
  19. Thank you, Eric and Gump. There will be no further experiments with leather-type needles on my part, not with fabric anyway.
  20. There's an idea I definitely will try! Lately the results have been a little better. I've pressed before edgestitching, lightened the pressure on the presser foot, moved my fingers closer to the foot, and used a seam ripper to nudge the under layer when it gets obstreperous. Which change helped most I can't say because I didn't apply one at a time. Janet
  21. I see. I think. Is an edge tape foot the same as an edge guide foot?
  22. I don't suppose this squishing-out could be caused by too much presser foot pressure?
  23. See? I'm getting an education! I guess roller feet are out for my Consew 206rb, so I won't waste time lusting after them. With the Consew, do all the feet need to have toothed bottoms?
