  1. So milled tooling leather is veg tanned like traditional tooling leather but never ironed so it still has a grained surface. After it is completely tanned and dried, it is then "milled", this process leaves it extremely soft and pliant. It is a pain in the butt to tool but would make very nice softer products.
  2. Thanks, I took your advice and sent a message to him. Not only very talented but a pretty decent individual as well!!!!
  3. Wallet....In fact I could use a new one.....
  4. Filigree blade styles should be added to the rather extensive and well written tutorial above. They have a steeper angle then regular angle blades and used predominately for fine decorative cuts.
  5. Yes particularly easier with a water based dye, as you will want to thin up any additional coats as the tone becomes exponentially darker the more coats you use....an example of the new Tandy professional water stains....
  6. I like the oil dyes by Fiebings, this being said I am a new convert and big cheerleader of the new Pro Water stains from Tandy. They are amazing and the color is brilliant. The only thing to keep in mind if you use them is they go on very dark and lighten considerable when they dry. Also make sure to really work them in as there is some kind of waxes in them and they like being rubbed in well.
  7. Great start man.... I had to store my first couple of projects as I was almost convinced they were ugly enough to scare the pretty off any new projects.....
  8. If you use a beveler that has a flater face you may want to lean slightly in the direction of travel, as it is the back edge of a beveler that will cause the marks.
  9. Hey there, I am a vet as well. Good to see another take up a great hobby.
  10. I have not as of yet, but aside from finish and using a less flexible piece of veg tan I can't really say it would be any difference. I have seen a few kits, I am always weary and really think things like seats work better when simply recovering a pan and pad made to fit a specific model. I assume you ride as well, are you looking for something specific?
  11. Hello all, new to the board and fairly new leatherwork and carving (little less than a year now). I really like new school style designs in tooling, though am very interested in the Sheridan Style (it speaks to me). Not much else to add really....just ask if curious.
  12. Hello, below find a few of the pieces I have been working on. I am new to the board and excited to pick up new tips. I really want to learn the Sheridan Style if anyone is particularly good with it. As an aside the notebook cover is carved on the new milled tooling leather.
