hi everyone, i just recieved a 1.6-2.0 double shoulder from tandy ukand im finding it quite difficult to carve, i have stropped my swivel knife several times but even after a good dampening it is still tough, i once heard someone say to put a small amount of washing up liquid in with some water to reduce drag, but even that doesnt really work. have i chosen the wrong type of leather or wrong cut? it was the craftsmen double oak shoulder thats on sale at the moment. any hints guys ;-)

Advice-Customers Driving Me Out Of Business
sharkeyfinn replied to aaron61032's topic in Getting Started
with regards to haggling, i haggle upwards, if someone comes at me with" i'll give you 15 for the 20 item, i come back with 25 and thats where the price stays unless they are dumb enough to try again, then it goes up to 30 and so on ;-) -
thanks everyone, i think the nail has been hit squarely on the head, i have been using the gel as dye/stain, instead of a highlighter, i did wonder why it took so much work to get an even coat ;-), im pleased, its another valuable lesson learned. thank you

hi everyone, i had my first custom order this week, which i was pleased about, however, the customer wanted the antique tan finish, and this happened i applied the antique gel with a dry dauber, and didnt notice any blemishes in the leather before i applied the dye, but this was the result, needless to say the customer wasnt interested in buying this, which was disheartening as i had carved a dog or her choice into it, however, i decided to try a work around and came up with this happily the customer saw this on my facebook page and swore at me (in a nice way ;-) ) and wants to buy it again. obviously i would like to avoid the above problem.so any hints would be much appreciated . ;-)

hi everyone ;-) im slowly getting the hang of things, but have come across something i need some help with. its do do with using multiple colours on a single project, i know the method of using finishing sheen as a resist, and have had...moderate success, but i seem to get little bleeds onto the bits i dont want to be a certain colour. what i would like to achieve is shown below. but for the life of me ,i cant figure out how to get the effect unless i hand paint, and i find it hard to believe that the items shown are done this way. thanks for the help, ;-)

My Recent Little Purse

looking forward to being this good ;-) -
i got into leathercraft because of my dear old dad, we do archery at the weekends in the summer in my garden. my dad who is in his late 70's ,made himself a longbow during the winter, and he used it all this summer. the reason for the cat in the design,is that i had a cat who use to come into my garden and watch us shoot, she would always sit in font of the target,so many a trip was had to move her out of the way, ha ha , while we were shooting this summer my dad turned to me and said " i miss that cat" which sadly i lost at the end of last summer. i was going to get someone to make me an armguard with a cat design on it, but then i thought why not give it a try, so here is my vert first attempt barring the kits i got from tandy that were included in the starter set. i have a couple of questions if i may. firstly as you can see by the tail, im not too good at small area curves, swerves and spirals, is there a particular method that you all use or is it purely down to practise? secondly, on the halo around the cat(and probably else where too) it seems like the swivel knife went in a bit too deep, if there are any hints and tips of all natures, please feel free to let me know and although i want honest opinions.......be nice ;-)

evening everyone ;-) im hopefully starting my first project soon,im hoping to make an ipad cover for my sister in law, she likes celtic stuff,i was going to do a celtic cross with a celtic concho in the middle, but i was hoping to paint the celtic cross with some paint to match the concho. i also do scale modelling and have various tamiya acrylic paints.is it ok to use these on leather or should i try to find dye? the paints are water based. thanks ;-)

thanks for the replies, ;-) im hoping to do things like phone cases, ipod covers, masquerade masks, and maybe one day some armour.i may be joining an art group and hope to exhibit ,along with other hobbies i have,so ideas about what type/thickness? of leather i would need for these starter projects would be usefull too. matt im not far from the tank museum in bovington, not bovington itself but a few miles down the road. thanks again.

evening all, im an absolute newbie here, i dont have ant tools or anything yet,the only thing i do have is enthusiasm to get started, however, i lve on the south coast of england(dorset) and i really dont know quite how to proceed, i was thinking of buying a kit from tandy, but that then lleads to the problem of continuing with further projects of my own,if anyone can guide me in the right direction i would be most grateful. ;-)

i just wanted to say hello,i am hoping to start this nice little hobby very soon, i have many interest, astronomy, scale model building/painting(military mostly) motor cycles, gardening, and a few more toboot, i suffer with depression and find things like the scale modelling are a real stress reliever and focuses my thoughts in a positive way. im hoping to find the same thing from leather working. oh i forgot, i love archery, which is where the idea came to try this, my dear old dad who is in his late 70's made himself a longbow, and i thought it would be nice to make him a traditional armguard, this then went to a quiver too. at the moment i dont even have any tools, but i was thinking of buying one of the kits from tandy leather, moving on from this i was also wondering where i can get the leathers i would need as i would also like to make things like masquerade masks ,armour and just ordinary things like ipad covers, i know this sounds a lot for a beginner, but i also am thinking of joining an art club which is run by a friend and she was keen for me to exibit some of my stuff, my tanks ,photo's and hopefully my leatherwork. any pointers you could all give me would be very very much apprieciated. with regards to getting hold of leather, i live on the south coast of england, dorset. thanks in advance ;-)
