  1. I've had this beautiful side of elk skin for years and I'd love to make a bag out of it. The problem is that it seems to stretchy to take much of the abuse a bag I'd like to make out of it would be put through. I was thinking of interfacing it with some less expensive split. Has anyone been down this path? If so, can you advise me? What would you use as adhesive for interfacing such a large piece of soft leather?
  2. I'm working on a Skyrim helmet. I'll post the pattern once I get it complete
  3. Not certain either but I'd bet it would be because if you closed it, the wallet wouldn't fold properly
  4. Thanks for the feedback!I will change the pattern and reupload today!
  5. I spotted a flaw in the frame design, will upload a revised design on Monday
  6. I also have used black river several times with excellent results. She still has my business
  7. What's the optimum ration for contact cement to thinner?
  8. Thanks for the feedback, Bruce. Just a question. If you were purchasing your first, which would you choose?
  9. I thought the terms were interchangeable but Osborne Leather Tools sells both a round knife AND a head knife. What would be the appropriate application for each?
  10. After an accident 12 years ago, my hands aren't as steady as they once were and I've been having an increasingly difficult time applying an even coat of edge dye and getting it to stay on the edge and not wander off onto the rest of my work. Then I saw something my daughter used to apply eye shadow: http://www.amazon.com/Mary-Sponge-Eyeshadow-Disposable-Applicators/dp/B007M4Q290/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1385391442&sr=8-7&keywords=eye+shadow+applicators These little guys do an amazing job of keeping the edge dye right where I want it! Just wanted to pass it along
  11. I've sort of combined my hobby with my business. As an engineer, my clients are architects. One way I've found of getting my foot in the door when calling on a new client is to create a nice leather portfolio, place my company's information inside of it and send it over as a gift. Then I call up and ask for an appointment.
  12. I have a pretty good quantity of 3/4 oz veg tan and was thinking of doubling that up to make a couple of belts instead of using 8 oz with a lining. Has anyone else done this? If so, did it work out for you? TIA
  13. When I was a kid I used a solution of alum. It seemed to really help take the hair off. You obviously know more than me about this so I'm wondering why you didn't use it.

I just got a stamp from lwleathers...they did good work!
  15. Up to this point, I have been using the standard diamond shape chisels for marking out my stitching holes but I must admit I see the English pricking irons being used in you tube videos whenever I see demonstrations on the construction of fine leather goods and I lust after them. My question is two part 1) Why do they seem to be the favorite of 'fine' leather craftsmen (what's their advantage) 2) why are they so %&^*&%^ expensive? Thanks in advance for your replies
