  1. I like the texture you got on the strap, also the dark colour with light stitch contrast. Nice job Allan
  2. The strap is riveted on with two rivets and then sewn through all three layers, it is purely for looks. The linning is glued on then the lacing marathon;)
  3. Rohn, Thank you for the encouraging words, I am a year in to my hobby now but it does not get old hearing feed back. Thanks for taking the time to look and comment:) Thank you for the comment, I have been trying to figure out what my style is…….. I feel hungry now;) Thanks, it really does look nice in person. I love this shade of brown and have done quite a few items this colour. Mike, That comment made me laugh and I probably should take it to heart. Ironiclly the first belt I made was for my uncle/godfather(one of the first topics I posted). I think making items for family is good practice, the initials are font I've carved before but the floral pattern was the first try. I also am a big fan of this boarder stamp. Monica, Thanks!!! I thought it would be comical to play on the post for my daughters belt as that post has probably had the most feed back of any topic i have started. P.S. I won't tell my daughter you said my dads belt is nicer than hers;) Allan
  4. So my dad asked me what I wanted for my birthday and my answer was a side of tooling leather….. The result was a side of light weight saddle skirting(13oz). I told him I would make him a belt with it and he could have anything he wanted, it started simple but then I gave him some options. He collected coins and these conchos were similar to some he collected years back. This belt was not as blingy as my daughters but it ended up with more tooling than hers. Here is the result…...
  5. Bill, Thank you for such an enthusiastic positive comment, you have motivated me to post "this is what happens when you let your 67 year old dad loose in the leader store" belt topic;) Come to think of it I saw a video on Tandy's French edge skiver and it showed exactly what you are refering to. I might have to buy one and try it out.
  6. Thanks cheryl Thanks Colt, My only worry with it is the weight of leather, I used 13oz which is heavy for the studs and crystals. I had to set them pretty hard to compress the leather and have the rivet catch. So far so good, none of the "bling" has come off. Allan
  7. Thank you, that pattern really works well on a ladies belt(my first time tooling it). The belt is very nice on, a real centre piece. Allan
  8. Thanks Joe, I am a fan of your work as well(thought those roll top bags were cool, want to try the cooper rivets). I have not tried any of the type of items you do yet, other than the wallet, cheque book in my beginner kit(not the same when you don't cut the pattern your self). This is a great place for info, I started a year ago have had people buy things from me. Pretty fun hobby. Allan
  9. Thanks guys. I see the wood look also, was not going for any look just making cuts and tool marks. This is the original peice I did to get the idea from, just a scrap from a remnants pack of leather.
  10. Thanks everyone for the nice comments:) The carving pattern was from a craftaid as my artwork is not great on my own, but still have to execute it and lay it all out in a way that is pleasing. You can't just throw everything at it and expect it to look good. Allan
  11. I just like the way it looks with a lining and the stitching. I feel like the belt feels more comfortable on, the linning I use is a 3-4oz deertan cow. The benefit of no lining is if a stud or other trim piece comes off or gets damaged it is easier to fix.
  12. I bet you wont find any like it It actually looks pretty cool and have had good feedback on it. Have been lazy and not been posting anything lately….
  13. My daughter asked if I could make her a belt, so to the leather store we went. Would you expect anything less as I said she could pick anything she wanted:) I was not expecting it to be $80-100 to make a belt(that was elite pricing). Used light weight saddle skirting(12-13oz) with deertan cowhide lining, nice substantial belt. Been a little while since I posted anything….. What do y'all think????? Allan
  14. Really like the basket weave pattern on that belt…... nice job. Man I need a sewing machine, my left shoulder is developing issues from pulling thread when sewing guitar straps/belts. About 5 labour intensive hours of hand sewing per. To be able to set up, test, and stitch in under an hour without the wear and tear on the body would be nice, just don't do enough volume to justify the expense. Allan
  15. Thanks for the comment "two different kinds of powerful wrapped into one package" Just what I was going for;) Made me smile Thanks Allan
  16. Ya!!!!! I guess what I meant by detail is the shading and color variation from tooling, not so much the pattern. I like how it looked before I dyed it, would have been nice just oiled and sunned…... but the black is nice with the guitar I made it for, I would have went for a more natural look if it was for an acoustic. Allan
  17. thank you I am just kind of winging it as I go, trying different things and learning from this site. thank you, looks like you have been getting into the guitar straps. It is nice when you make one that is not a total copy of others and people are positive about your design and possibly are inspired to try making one(nice run on sentence).
  18. I am sure he will love it, I bet it is real comfy with that felt. The bag is a nice touch, makes me think of Crown Royal;) Allan
  19. I set out to make a strap for my black SG and this is what I came up with…….. It pained me to dye it black as the carving/tooling detail almost disappeared in the black. I had my mind set on black with white stitching, the studs were an after thought. I have tried the studs on a few cuffs and was going to add them to a strap sooner or later. My daughter told me it is very cool and asked where I got the patern for the studs. I told her it was just what came to me when I started placing them in the open areas, she was impressed. This is the first time I have done a wide border on a strap and happy with the out come. This is a cut to length strap that is meant for one guitar and is really nice without the extra clutter of length adjustment detail. I used 9-10 oz leather with 3-4oz deertan cow for lining, this makes for a substantial strap. The strap locks can be a challenge to get on as you run out of neck on the collar that goes through the strap button hole. I had my machinist friend make me a punch to compress the leather at the mounting area, makes it just thin enough to get the nut on to tighten it down. you can see the compressed leather in the first couple pics. I know the celtic and studs are a different mix, but I think being black it makes it ok. It looks very sharp on the guitar. Thanks for looking Allan
  20. Hold on, let me get my shirt off……... …………yup, feels good;) Allan
  21. Yes, they are Schaller strap locks. On that first pic you can see the edge of the lining leather which is deer tan cow hide, so can't burnish that stuff:) All the veg tan leather is burnished. I have a pro edge burnisher on order so hopefully my edges will get even better in the future. Allan
