How Do You Finish The Flesh Side Of Your Straps?
FoamerAce replied to FoamerAce's topic in How Do I Do That?
Thanks for the advise. I don't have space for a proper workshop, and wouldn't us an orbital sander in the dining room. I use a sanding block for my edges. I'll see what I can do with that. Mop & Glo eh? Definitely give that a try. -
But you can get black and white thread anywhere. Why should there be any demand for black/white tiger thread? What is the fetish for tiger thread? As far as I know the only thing that makes it a hand stitcher's MacGuffin, is that it is produced in assorted colors and 0.2mm incitements.

Those with experience please chime in and bestow the benefit upon me.

It appears they're only offering two sizes and only in black or white. If it's not available in a rainbow of colors and sizes, what's the point?

Well seeing as I'm the one that accepted the bet, you should send it to me. Would you like to pay with PayPal or BitCoins?
-
I'll take that bet. It's not uniform enough to be an embossing roll. I've never seen embossed leather look so cleanly beveled either. Then again, I haven't seen all that much embossed leather. But the slight irregularities lead me to believe it can't be rolled.

Me too please. I sent you a PM. Looks like you haven't read it yet.

Tom... I had read the first post article, I wasn't clear about some things. But I think you cleared up most of what most confused me. Thanks!

Well now I'm doubly confused. In order to get crisp tool marks, the proper moisture in the leather is of utmost importance yes? I've been wetting my leather by wiping it with a wet sponge and waiting several minutes. From my (very limited) experience, I have an idea about how much water to apply and what it should look like before I start tooling. The idea that I should submerge leather and let it set for hours (days?) is completely new to me. And did someone say you should keep it in the fridge? Because I don't have that option.

Just getting started in leather work here. I'm gobsmacked to learn that it's wrong to case with a sponge. This is new information to me. The pdf in the initial post raises more questions than it answers for me. What is the step by step I should be doing? Is it important to leave it overnight?

Tandy Leather Expedition Briefcase Kit
FoamerAce replied to Hooper26's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Hi all. I'm new to leatherworking, and very new to this site. In fact, this is my first (hopefully of many) post. I usually do kits because cutting from whole cow is three times the work with almost no added fun. I just did the expedition briefcase. I customized it with lining and pockets. I think it came out great. Have a look The leather that came with the kit is the best I've worked with. 3mm and carves like butter. The holes are "big" but that was more of a feature than a bug given the way the gussets are folded and stitched in. I don't think there's any way you could use double needle technique on this. If there's any interest, I'll tell you more about how I made it, suggestions, and issues with the instructions.- 51 replies
