I have one slicker from ebay that works pretty good it is sort of round and cone shaped with different sizes of grooves in it . I think it came from china. it was relatively inexpensive . I did some light sanding on it and treated it with a oil and beeswax . which made it work better . as I recall shipping was a couple of dollars US . I have a power slicker and it serves a purpose But Mine doesn't put as nice a finish as a hand done one I still usually go back to my deer antler that I made . Cut off a tine take a small round fine file and shape the grooves to your desired width and shape and lightly sand it till it feels very smooth oil it occasionally. I have never found anything that works better . It also doubles pretty good for a slicker. You are lucky in Europe you have access to Roe deer antlers which have a much thicker outside shell. than our whitetail and mule deer in America .

How Many Reins Out Of A Side
carver replied to Randy valensin's topic in Saddle and Tack Accessory Items
The belly would have to much stretch for water loops . I have pretty good success using it on headstalls for the ear pieces on one and 2 ear work headstalls I also have used it to line[ the side against the horses face] some show headstalls when I use veg tan for the outer surface. But anything that is going to be pulled on or have stress on it, it stretches too much. -
Started using a wood carving glove after cutting the top of my thumb joint OFF you can get them at any of the woodcarving supply houses . I then painted the palm and finger side of it with rubber glue so it would grip better and it took a little getting used to but works well . I was cutting a fender out for a saddle and the blade snapped and took off at an angle and completely cut the top of the joint off . they literally glued it back together . and it works fine now . So UK RAY now you have heard of it. and the knife was sharp and my hand was about 6 inches away from my cutting line it was just a really tough piece of 12 oz. skirting leather . and I do this for a living , but freak accidents happen, so if it makes you feel more secure wear a glove . I did eventually get over being spooked and have since quit using the glove. and nothing takes the place of being very careful

What Is The Best Leather For Making Headstalls?
carver replied to camano ridge's topic in Saddle and Tack Accessory Items

you can buy a new artisan torro or a cobra for about the same as the used Adler . I bought the artisan years ago and it still works great the support was great and I needed it as I had never had a machine before and learned on it. I have bought a couple of used lighter machines since then and have had a lot of problems keeping them running ...... My advice is call both artisan and cobra and tell them what your trying to do. BOTH companies are great and can explain quite well how to do what you need . I imagine the other companies out there are good as well or they wouldnt still be in business . My personel experience was with these guys and they are GREAT Actually my Torro will sew down to pretty light weight like 2 pieces of 2 oz leather with very LITTLE adjustment and sew suede, harness or skirting with no problemand we regularrly repair horse sheets which are just nylon cloth but it will slip on this. The point being you might even get by with 1 machine

-
any input on lighting for carving would be appreciated . I am currently looking at the Mini-techlite . Are there any better lights for focussing on a specific area . I have been useing several flourescents overhead and 3 different desk lamp spot lights for years . Getting old and the shadows are starting to be a problem . So what is every body else using . I read the post here on the tec-light just want to see if its the best availble at a reasonable price

first time I have replied to anything on this site ............. but this person is FULL OF SOMETHING . I bought a artisan 3000 a few months back and it is a GREAT MACHINE does everythig I ask it too and more than they said it would . I find myself self going to my shop just finding stuff to sew because its so easy to use and does such a nice job.this thing will sew a single layer of suede then turn around and sew a saddle skirt with very little adjustment NO frustrations with this machine EVER !!!! I havent found a retailer out there selling ANYTHING that has better or actually even comes close to providing better service . Its NOT a GREAT MACHINE for the MONEY........... its a just a GREAT MACHINE PERIOD. And the service is so far ahead of other companies it has made my other encounters with other retailers disapointing because they dont even come in a close third or fourth place. This person could not have EVER even tried using one and if he had and had trouble I PERSONALLY gaurentee the company would have it rectified immediatly no matter what it took to straighten it out
