I also recently acquired a 31-15 and had the same question ! I have already emailed Bob asking for a recommendation and price quote. I've heard Bob's servo has a built in speed reducer which others don't, is that right? What would be the result of using a servo (like on eBay for under $100) that does not have speed reducer built in? Thanks

Hi, I have a 29K58 and have been able to get spares from Campbell Randall in Yoakum, TX. . . As Wiz said, it is likely you'd need to call them for some of the parts, as these folks' primary machines are not the Singers (so not listed on their website), but they do have many parts in stock. They have been very helpful when I've called them. http://www.randallmachine.com/ 401 Irvine St. Yoakum, TX 77995, U.S.A. Joe, Thanks for checking even at Lowes. . . and since leatherwork is just a hobby for me, I wouldn't need tons of these...I appreciate this inexpensive/disposable option. fortysomething, thanks for the HarborFreight option...that gets them down to 10 cents if I can get them without shipping...Even on Ebay price there is a lowest cost of about 15 cents/each if you buy 144. Thanks !

Well, just by searching on Ebay, I see the type of brush that you are talking about . Where are you able to get them for 20 for a buck, or at least where's the best place you've found to get yours? Thanks!
-
I am not familiar with those brushes for soldering, where can they be purchased, or can you provide a link to a picture or more info? Thanks for this inexpensive alternative also.

Thanks to both of you, those are exactly what I was looking for and wasn't able to locate !! Love this site.

Where can I find an empty bottle with a built-in brush attached to the screw-on lid. .. for spreading Contact Cement more easily? I have found the contact cement sold in a small jar with brush, but would prefer to purchase additional empty bottles/brushes, and refill with contact cement purchased in quart or gallon. Much Thanks !

Tanners Bond Contact Cement Alternatives Please?
TZHunter replied to NewYorkerInSydney's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I have always used the Weldwood Contact Cement. .. I've bought mine at WalMart in the quart for about $8 which is much less than other stores...working with the quart is messy, so I've purchased one of the smaller jars with a brush attached to the lid. . . and just keep refilling my smaller jar, as using with the brush is much easier. .. the empty jars with this brush attached to the lid are available at quite a few of the hobby/craft stores also. .. just make sure you use the contact cement as instructed....THIN layer on each side to be glued....let set 15 minutes, then attach both sides together. .. has worked great for me for years now...TZHunter -
I contacted Jon over the weekend, and he said the Boss is sold...TZHunter

Jessica, What a nice wife who will try to do this for her husband ! I love to do one-of-a-kind things like this. Rather than try to skive and mold the leather, I think I'd consider making something else that perfectly conformed to his cheek and then cover that with leather. . . one thought would be to use some silicon caulking and have saran wrap or something thin and protective between the caulk and the cheek. . . if you squeeze it out onto something which allows it to begin to dry in a shallow "box". . .then as it dries...you can have him place his cheek on it firmly (with protective separation like saran wrap or something else) and then let the caulk dry completely. . . then you can cut it to whatever shape you want, then attach/glue it to the gun and cover the cheek portion with a thin layer of leather. . . just my initial thought of how I'd do it, rather than gluing lots of pieces of leather together and skiving LOTS of pieces.....Doug (TZHunter)

Briefcase Divider Material ?
TZHunter replied to TZHunter's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
Spinner, Thanks. I knew there must be a place to get this. What you have described sounds almost exactly what was in this case I'm duplicating. I will surely try one of these places. Appreciate your help. -
Briefcase Divider Material ?
TZHunter replied to TZHunter's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
I didn't know about that. Looks cool the way its molded over pistols. The 2' x 4' piece is $32, which is about the same cost as leather. What is in this sample I have is not very fancy, but owner says its lasted 20+ years. . . looks like a stiff cloth but has a coating of something almost like vinyl on it. Thanks for your help. -
Briefcase Divider Material ?
TZHunter replied to TZHunter's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
Thanks. I was just trying to reproduce the same type of divider that was in a sample briefcase that a person brought in to duplicate. I'd prefer the entire thing to be of leather, but the person preferred the straighter/smoother/stiffer divider that was used on this older briefcase, so was trying to find something comparable. -
What do ya'll use as the "stiffener" on dividers sewn into the gusset on briefcases? Where do you get it? Of course, I want something that will be durable, strong, and last as long (hopefully) as the leather. Thanks Much !

I sent you a message also re the Boss. .. when you get a chance please reply....Thanks

Wiz, Thanks so much for your response, which includes plenty of detail which will help us make a decision on this machine. I especially appreciate you taking the time to give us the bullet points of things we'll need to do if we will be sewing leather regularly with this machine. Thanks again for your time a advice !

Does anyone know about the Singer 191D machine? Here's my situation. I am a missionary in Africa and have someone I work with who is managing a small leatherworking project that benefits the local community. Up to now this project has been doing everything by hand, but would like to begin machine-sewing some projects to increase their product line, etc. They want to mainly sew upholstery-type leather for purses, small pouches, etc. Their current expectation is to only sew things up to 3/16". Options for getting a machine are VERY limited, and importing one is not currently possible so am looking to buy the best thing I can find locally. The only machine I've been able to find locally that is made to sew light/medium leather is this Singer 191D. . . They must have been purchased/imported a few years ago, because I understand from singer website that the 191D is no longer made (replaced with 1191D), but the one I'm looking at is new. What I'd like to know? -What should this machine cost? (this shop is asking $800 with Table, motor, head, and all supplies needed ) -What are this machines' capabilities? -Thickness of material it will sew? -Thread sizes? (uses the 135x5,135x7 needles I think) Thanks MUCH!

Arbo, Thanks Much ! That's and excellent way to determine whether its Iron or Aluminum. Thanks again, TZHunter

I'm corresponding with someone who is selling a Boss, but they don't know if it is Cast Iron or Aluminum. The person has no idea of judging weight. It was purchased from Tippmann in 2003. Is there any other marking, etc that will guarantee its Cast Iron (which I want)? Is there something different on the Model between the Cast Iron vs Aluminum? Much Thanks, TZHunter

Greetings to all the Texas folks ! I grew up in Bishop, TX (6 miles from Kingsville, 25 from Corpus) my folks still live there. I worked in Baytown for Exxon out of College years ago. Now am a Missionary in Kenya, East Africa, coming back to south TX every few years for a few months. Still do a little leatherwork as hobby. Can get GREAT Veg Tan leather here for under $1/sq foot. . .wish I had more time for this hobby. When you are 15,000 miles away, It's great to here folks talking about "home" here on Leatherworker !
