  1. The acrylics I use are just water based (Angelus paints).  I add water to them if I want them to flow more or soak into the leather, and can add layers on top of them to get more vibrant colors.  Like red on top of white to make the red pop, etc.

Like the humor.  and the tooling!

  2. I did manage to go to the show impromptu.  Quite a few vendors at  the tradeshow, managed a class at the last minute.  It was a good event.  Met Mr. Don Gonzalez, and Ms. Lisa Sorrell, which I am sure was awkward for both of them.      But I enjoyed it tho!  Both very kind, intelligent, and informative.  Will need to spend more time at a future show, was only able to drive up for about 3/4 of a day worth of stuff out of the entire week they were there.

Did not see Mr. Beard, hopefully he gets around to doing more in the future.

What's not to like? Good voice/music /content. Well done Yin.

Thanks!  I was concerned the voice might be a detriment, glad to hear it was not.  Working on Part 3, but I am retaining my title as world's slowest... editing down hours of video to something short and sweet takes some doing I am learning.

Looks good so far!  I'm working on a purse for my mother, and would love to put a video together of some of my other projects down the road!

Thank you!  Good luck with putting together your videos.  I have part 3 filmed, but still need to take the time to sit down and properly edit it.

your keeping it small/short  to one step at a time is an awesome idea. I have watched a video of over two hours before but not on leather work lol, rebuilding a 4l60 e tranny, the guy was good!!!! both in his video work , precise and to the point, and his tranny work you could tell he knew his shit and could do it blindfolded.

Thanks.  Part 2 is out.  I don't claim to be an expert, just another guy doing things a tad differently.

    I second the clock/timer suggestion!

I'll try to find a decent one...

Ahhh.  For a headset you can get a foam pop filter which should help.  If the headset will allow it, you can try moving the mic a little farther from your mouth.  I wear a headset every day for work, and folks told me that sound was much improved after adding a foam filter.  I had a problem with finding one that would fit  exactly right but found one on Amazon that was close enough, but it needs a small rubber band to keep it from slipping off.

Headset does have a move-able microphone, has a little foam piece also, but really not top quality, and prolly 15+ years old.  I'll be looking for a new one... until then I'll try to get it to work better.

My last thought if you decide on educational videos for beginers find a friend who doesn't know s*#t about leather work and let him make something using only your videos. it will become apparent really fast what you need to work on.

That is top notch advice, right there, lol!

you referenced using a ball point pen in tracing without talking about backing the tracing paper your using,

I did mention ever so fast that the tracing was covered in tape... but yah, if someone missed it they'd be learning the hard way.

Regarding all the details you suggest bringing into the information portion of a video, I like it.  If I find that there is a lot of desire for that kind of knowledge going forward, I'll start to include it.  At first I am afraid of putting so much in there that it becomes a 5 hour video that no one wants to see, and then the risk that there is so little info that again, no one wants to see it!  I have started a video on just tools, that way I can refer to it as I am going and not have to discuss knives each time I do a carving, etc.  I hope that works well, time will tell.

but for me I can't do slow for no reason. There's one guy in particular talks so slow I can't watch more than about 30 seconds.

waaaaaiiittt a minute there.  I resemble both comments!  Prolly talk to slow, and watch all those youtube videos at 2x whenever I can!

Hard to know what is difficult or intricate to others, but if I find it important I tend to do some voiceover to explain what happened.  I think with time I may discover more and more what folks want to see more of.  Or less of!

OK Yin! This is just my opinion and I only say to help and maybe show a different viewpoint.

I do appreciate it.  I'll work my way through the kinks more and more as I go along, just thought I'd give it a go and see how it goes for me.  I'll consider all the suggestions and add them in wherever I can.  I've already done some more video work, so I won't be able to add in everything right away, but with time I think they'll continue to improve.

You are right about keeping folks attention!  the analytics show where folks drop off, and when they stay on.  Very interesting thing to look at.

This is a lot of work, by why. I will probably regret I opened this can of worms.

Heheh yeah, I'll probably be asking myself both of those questions, and regret the can of worms myself.  :)

I may only ever do this one series, I may do many, just depends on the reception.  I think part of it is to give leatherworkers a different take, my antiquing process and tooling is a bit different I think.  Also, to give my work a bit more of a wider audience, very few folks see what I do or how it is done.  Even friends that know me don't know really what I am doing.

Kudos to you for taking the time to put this together.  It is not an easy task.  I am guessing for that sub 7 minute video, there are over several hours of work that went into it.  Great job.  Suggestion - I love the music you chose, may just want to turn it down and leave it at the same volume throughout rather than having it louder when you aren't talking.

Yes, many hours for me.  In fact, probably 8 hours trying to figure it all out for each video.  I expect to get much faster as I move along.  I'll try to even out  the music volume some.  Thanks for the compliment!

Good job Yin! I like the style, the font etc. If I might nit pick slightly, firstly I think some aspects could be shorter and secondly, if you are aiming at beginners, they won't understand terms like "casing solution", hell I don't understand what "casing solution" is, I thought it was just water but then I'm not a tooler. One last point, a genuine question, does the painters tape stick to damp leather? Or maybe put it on before casing? I've never seen blue painters tape over here in the UK.

I'm not a tooler but I know your work and I will be following. I'm sure I'll learn lots.

Thank you.  I tried to keep it as short as I could, will focus more on that for the next ones.  I may make separate videos for casing solution, we'll see.  Just water does work, btw!  The painters tape will stick some to cased leather, but not wet leather.  I usually put it on afterwards, it gets more aggressive after tooling, so you have to work a bit to get it off.  It will come off easier than regular tape for sure tho.

Over all pretty darn good.   I would suggest a pop filter/windscreen of some sort for your microphone, though.  They aren't expensive at all, and can help audio quality.  Lighting is fairly good, as is the content.

If you want to do the time-lapse thing, put a clock in the background so that folks know how much time is really spent.  Since you're trying to let customers know what goes into your product - 30 seconds could give the impression of something taking just a few minutes when in reality it takes half an hour or more.  A nice big clock could help to correct that perception.

    - Bill

@billybopp, thank you for the suggestion.  I will look for something of that nature.  I don't really have a microphone, so I may look for something better along that line also, just using an old headset I have.  I thought about putting a clock when I first started, but realized that I have a lot of interruptions during the work, so the time would not be very representative.  I may get a timer, presuming I actually remember to turn it on and off!    Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!
