Sharpen the blade on a strop, and start the first inch with a knife. The problem is the blade needs to be so sharp as to not catch and get caught up. Standard blades are only sold sharp, not very sharp.

Do you have another picture of 102 as it's very blurred and can't really be seen

Either before or after. If before then I let it soak up first or the glue might not dry properly. But it all depends on my mood and what I'm making.

Well couldn't find my old one so quickly made one up. Didn't have fencing wire so used a 2.5mm welding rod. With a little more work you wouldn't need to buy one. Just add a handle.

I made my first edger up from a description in a Ron Edwards book. 4mm x 120mm heavy fencing wire, flattened on one end. Cut a groove lengthways with a dremal or hacksaw about half an inch up. Bend the wire up a bit. groove upwards. The use a triangular file to widen the mouth of the groove. Polish the bottom of the tool on a oil stone until it's nice and sharp. Clear?? No probably not, I'll try and find it and take a picture.

Well done on your first project looks very good. Only use the pure neatsfoot and just a couple of light coats. The neatsfoot compound is not recommended as it is a blend of mineral oils and not so good for the leather. Tony

For strength and looks, I much prefer hand sewing. But for speed, then machines are the way to go. I still hand sew buckles on belts etc, as I try not to use rivets and have not found an acceptable way to use the machine.

Thanks Ray, it was a pleasure to come and perv at your workshop. My wife has named the machine Lara. Looked her up on Singer last night and she was born on 10th March 1937. Still a looker for her age. Put some leather on her bed and she's like a young woman, the things she can do!

Maybe it's time to bring the symbol back to it's true meaning and not a sign of hate. I'd happily use the symbol and if anyone complains explain to them that the Nazi regime stole the symbol and it is time to give it back to cultures who have used it long before Hitler.

Wow her work looks amazing. The picture to me looks like it's been airbrushed as does some of her newer pieces.

At a guess I would say they are brass plated and the orange colour is the beginning of rust. If you wanted to experiment you could try ammonia vapor, leaving them in urine or in a compost bin. Not sure if this would work for plated stuff though. Often brass has a clear lacquer coating and this needs to be removed first.

I've suffered from depression most of my life my no more so than when my wife and son left me and went back to Australia. With little work I found it very hard to live. Then a year or so ago I found leatherwork. With the help of music and a creative outlet I spent a long time just thinking of leather and how I could improve my work. I would sleep and wake thinking of my next project. It helped me stop thinking of all the bad stuff and concentrate on improving my work. Financially it has been very hard, but now things are starting to look up. I still make little money from my leather work but I'm happier. Learning to forgive your self and to learn to live are far more important than money. Right now I have some work for the next few weeks and I hope to save up and go and see my wife and son in the next few months. My wife is willing to give me another chance and god willing we will sort out immigration so we can live together. Just take a step at a time and do small things that you know you can accomplish. Praise yourself, even for the very little things like a smile. But most of all breath and remember if you have never been sad how would you know when you are happy. Good luck Tony

Wow, your mask is awesome. 'Fraid i'm rubbish at names so no help there. Have you thought about geating a photographer and models to take some some pictures of your masks?

Just a thought if you get welded, would you not have to cover the cutting portion of the blade with something like clay so as not to loose the temper. Can we see a picture of the knife. Just so we can mourn the passing of a once great tool, and hopefully see it come back to life.
