  1. This is my first belt. It will replace my old wal mart work belt. I learned a couple different things from this. 1.) as much as it is a pain in the butt, load the needles with enough thread to get one side of the belt done. ( one side I did not do this and the stitching is not to my satisfaction). 2.) I need another pricking iron! The only one I currently own is 8 spi. This brings a question from me to the forum, who presently manufactures the best for the least amount of dinero in pricking irons? I would also like to thank everyone for their time and patience with working with us just getting into leather. I have learned and continue to learn so much from this site! Thanks again
  2. Thanks a bunch guys. I will check out the Keen Edge and will most likely go with it since you both like it. Thanks again
  3. Hi all. I have been sharpening my swivel knife by guesstimating the proper angle but I want a sharpening guide. I thought that I read somewhere my blade was a 65* angle. I found this one on Amazon that I was thinking about. http://www.amazon.com/Quality-Leather-Swivel-Sharpener-Leathercraft/dp/B00MUE3LV4. But reading the the information about it, it says it is on a 30* angle. I need advice from knowledgeable people and this is the perfect place to find out! Thanks
  4. Thanks Halitech....all good advice which I will heed! After getting it stitched, I actually thought of doin exactly what you mentioned about ending with the thread inside....I guess that would kind of be like a half stitch?
  5. A friend wanted a Roper style wallet, so hare it is. I think I am improving but there are still glitches here and there, hopefully one of these days I'll get one without any! I also have a question about stitching...down by the left hand corner I ran out of thread, so according Al Stohlmans book I tied off, reloaded the needles, and started 3 stitches behind the last stitch to continue, but that makes those stitches more chunky and it really stands out. Am I understanding correctly this procedure? Is there any way to get rid of that chunky look?

  7. That is the plan, going up there in the morning and find out if she comes in often or if they can contact her. I will leave them my contact info... They have come to know me quite well... I can't get out of there without spending a couple hundred bucks.
  8. She said she carried that hippy bag 10 yrs. as it was her favorite purse. I told her I was going to borrow it to make a pattern. It's just an open raw leather bag inside, but she said that's what she liked about it... Everything was easy to find.
  9. Mom also showed me these two purses she bought in 1967...she remembers paying $65 per purse, which is probably equivalent to $275- $300 in today's faux money.
  10. My mother showed me this this evening. Her sister (my aunt) made this for her in 1963.
  11. Agree with all of the above.... Just need to know when the time quit is now and the discipline to quit!
  12. You are right on about that last stamp....I get that maul in my hand and I go stupid! I need to force myself to stop, and every move be deliberate with forethought. I am finally figuring that out.
  13. When using this camouflage tool around the border....I have a question. I am not happy at all with turning a corner, and thinking of trying a different strategy. What if I do all the corners first, stamping the first impression at a 45* angle? What is the proper technique?
  14. I will sure be happy when I can build one of these dang wallets without any glitches!
  15. The mod I was using before this was a bottom fire, swore I will never use a bottom fire again. As far as the basket weave layout...I just made another wallet and used the traditional overlap. I like it as well, but I also like that extended look. When I finish I will post some pics. About half way through stitching it up and then need to spit and polish.
  16. The mod is 30 watt variable "cloudpor" and the tank is a Kanger. I've only had this setup about a month now (did have a mech mod") but so far so good. The mod has 2 pretty strong magnets that hold the battery access panel on. The only problem is if you put it into the holster backwards than how it was formed the friction fit is pretty tight and it tends to pull the battery panel off getting it out.i have started remembering to put the tank at the rear of the holster and there is no problems that way.
  17. This Saturday I went to my local Tandy. There was a girl in there working on this, and I love this piece. It was originally painted by Remington, but her work is beautiful. I am kicking myself in the butt now, but I will try to reconnect with her and see if she can take me on as a student.
  18. Very slick sheath, job well done. Like you, I think the mora sheath is pretty cheesy and I have been wanting to try my hand for a leather sheath for my mora. I have been busy making wallets for folks that I have not found the time. Hopefully, I can make one as pretty as yours....btw, have you used a dangler in the past? That's what I am planning, but have never owned one.
  19. Yan, I agree with dirtclod 100%. I am a newby with leather myself, and still struggling with stitching ( and I might add everything else) but I have noticed in myself, a lot of improvement with not a whole lot of practice...I also love the challenge of trying to get my stitching as perfect as I can get it. Keep at it and best of wishes with leather!
  20. Ex smoker been cig free for 3.5 yrs, with help from vape. I have been wanting to do this for awhile now, and literally flew through this little project in a little less than 2 hrs, but let the leather dry overnight.
