I really like the all natural method of dying and was wondering if it is possible to use the vinegaroon method to get a graduated effect like in the attatched photo. Anything I've read here describes the method as dipping the leather and really soaking it. Has anyone tried to get a graduated effect (black to nothing) with the vinegar mix and then apply more colors?? Don

That is some sharp!! I know a few friends that would get off on that. I still consume my fair share of beverage but the last time I had a too full a belly of Old No. 7 I was watching the chain saw scene from the movie Scar Face. Haven't been able to touch the stuff since.

So I says to this guy (my brother inlaw) do you know anyone who does leather work as I'm thinking of giving it a try and would love to borrow some tools to try it out (I am so cheap!). He says "No, but I use to do a fair bit myself back in the day and have quite a few tools". JACKPOT!!!!!!! Well maybe not quite. Stuff is pretty rusty and rough. I was hoping more for bevlers, shaders, backgrounders and such. But beggers can not be choosers and I am appreciative. Pretty rusty. Started to clean them up. Not bad! No idea what this is or does. Can someone tell me? Most of the tools are stamped C.S. OSBORNE & COMPANY HARRISON N.J.. Any good? Don

Man, I am so blown away by this stuff. So beautiful and perfect looking. I've also never sat on a seat like this; wouldn't you feel that lacing around the suede or does it sit very flat?

David, I've used some of your pictures to help explain my questions. If that's not ok let me know and I'll cease. I really am a novice in this area. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated. If you stacked your top and bottom pannels would the lacing holes at the perimeter of each panel line up as in photo. Would this always put the lacing near the middle of the side of the seat? For this type of seat I guess you attatch the bottom panel to the pan before you start lacing things up. If you use 1" of foam or 2" of foam how do you arive at the right demensions for your panels. I'm just guessing that the thickness of foam would determine how far away the lacing holes are from the outline of the pan??????? Just how much tension are you puting on the lacing to pull the two peices, top and bottom, together. Is it alot or are you just bringing them to gether with a slight tension on the foam. Does this allow better or easier shaping at this end or is it just for looks? This is fairly heavy leather. How do you get such lovely curves and shaping. Is it just simple pressure from the lacing causing the leather to conform to the underlying foam or is it wet down and stretched or molded?

Hi everyone Here comes another newbie! This site is great; very informative and seemingly quite friendly. I've only lurked for one day before signing up (that's a record)! I'm in the process of building my own chopper from the ground up and would like to do it all myself, including the seat. I think with the help I could get here it's quite doable. I barely know what questions to ask at this point, still trying to learn as much as possible cruising the site. These two spots I found on bikernet have really motivated me. ttp://www.theobaldleather.com The "Jesus seat from start to finish" sounds like another good motivator as Dave's seats are really along the lines of what I'm looking for in my project. IS there any chance of salvaging or restoring it? My bike is a Triumph, Yamaha, Harley, custom Hybrid (all the left over stuff I had in the garage).
