  1. I'm not stopping. I'll get a shot of the leather. Here's a shot of the organizer, no idea if there's a way to tell the kind of leather from this or not. It's from a bag that Tandy calls Premium Remnants. https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/premium-remnants-12-oz
  2. Yeah, I figured the answer would be that it comes with experience.
  3. So my first actual project was a pock organizer to hole my Leatherman, flashlight and pen. It turned out ok, but a couple of days after use, the leather has stretched and doesn't hold the flashlight tight. When I made it, I pulled the leather around each item fairly tightly before stitching. But it was not difficult to put the flashlight into the pouch so obviously I didn't make it tight enough. So how do you estimate how much the leather will stretch? What do I do different next time so I don't end up with the stretch? I don't really know what kind of leather I used, it was in a bag of Tandy "premium" remnants.
  4. Gotcha. But remember that we are our own harshest critics.
  5. Looks great. Enlighten this newbie, what have you seen on it that you are going to improve? It looks fantastic to my eye, but I'm REALLY new so don't really know what to look for.
  6. Great looking work. The belt is awesome. What's that last item? Looks good, but I don't know what it is.
  7. Welcome from another newbie. Your stuff looks great.
  8. If I had planned on using it for anything other than stitching practice, I'd have planned out the stitching better. It really only ended up holding my scissors because I noticed that they fit. Next project is a wallet, I think. Or maybe a belt.

    Oval punches

I like that with the oval holes, the belt doesn't seem to get pulled out of shape like the round holes do. Of course the only belt I had with oval holes was a higher end belt than I usually buy. Bikermutt, love your signature block. Isn't that the way most hobbies start? And a belt is obviously on my list of things to make.
  10. Hello folks. Newbie here and obviously from Maryland, USA. I'm a computer guy, I'm going after my Masters in a tech field, many of my hobbies are messing with Raspberry Pi computers and playing around with Linux. I'm getting a bit burned out and I started looking for a hobby that I can do and kind of unplug while doing it. Kind of ironic that YouTube videos led me here. I just started this week and here's my first projects. First was the stitching pony in the background made from scrap wood in the basement. The veg tanned piece was just to give stitching a shot. Turned out to be the perfect size for my thread scissors, strictly coincidental. The black piece is what I wanted to make first, it's just to organize the multitool, pen and flashlight that I carry every day. I'm happy with how it turned out, but I did learn that I'm not a fan of that thin leather, it's a little stretchy for my tastes.
  11. Hi guys. Really new to leather craft. One of my near future projects is going to be a belt. I've watched many YouTube videos. It looks like the way to go is oval punches. I have round hole punches and not really sure that I'll make use of oval punches in the near future. I know that part of the fun of a new hobby is getting all the tools. But being new, I'd rather not spend the money on tools that I may not use any time soon. Instead of an oval punch, how much of an overlap can I have for round punches in place of an oval? The various pics sort of look like it is a tear drop shape.
