I'm making chaps for work they historically correct shotgun chaps I don,t have a horse so just for protecting my Jean's and I live in a damp wet but some times hot country. Water buffalo

is buffalo leather better for chaps than cow leather.

i have a GEORGE BARNSLEY & SONS saddlers awl when i go through the leather and trie to pull it out it comes out of the awl handle.

ah i see. i heard the reason for using veg tanned leather is because it's tougher.

yes i meant 19th century. where conchos use for chap closure on shotgun chaps.

I am going to begin to start making western chaps. Does anyone know what type of tanning process the ranchers used in the 18th century. I am more interested in natural tanning techniques.
