Hi guys! I'm new to the forum and excited to be here. I've been trying to fix this for 2 days now. I am stitching felt onto 7 oz veg tan. I can get a beautiful straight stitch. For the backstitch only, I get the top thread looping at the bottom. Attached are images of what I mean, as well as an image of the machine I'm using (Highlead/Artisan 2698-1). I've tried adjusting the tension, changing the needle and different thread thicknesses. I thread the needle with the foot up. I've tested it about 100 times and if I wanted to do this, I'm now confident I could do it every time. Its the same result with every thread combination. But I don't want to do it this way, so any help would be appreciated.

This thread is about the selection criteria for a leather goods workshop / production location. In my case I am keen to source a production site for messenger bags, weekenders and small travel goods from a workshop in Asia. I will bring veg tanned leather from Italy, Serafil thread and YKK Excella zippers, so in essence I need select a site based on design capability, available machinery and labor skills. I will be on site myself throughout the production cycle, but as a newbie, selecting a quality partner is tricky. Anyone with experience in this field? A guide to visiting workshops? What machinery ticks the box? Kind of questions to ask? A standard agreement form with details to tick off? Help is much appreciated.

My first post, great to be here! Much is written already on top notch thread for hand sewing, my question is about machine sewing. I came across some beautiful messenger bags made with Italian veg tanned leather, such as: http://www.travelteq.com/All-Leather-Trash/Leather and http://www.barneys.com/boldrini-selleria-double-handle-briefcase-504088446.html What type of thread are these guys using, you'd say? Nylon, polyester, linen?

Hello everyone! I'm rather new around here, and after reading a bit and getting some practice with spare leather pieces I decided to begin the real work by making a simple wallet. I'd like to show all the steps here to help other beginners like me and, more importantly, ask doubts to all the kind, handsome, wise and experienced craftsmen around :-) 1 - Choices, choices... I found a simple and nice folding wallet that I liked at a shop in my neighborhood. After silently staring at it like a lunatic for about 45 minutes I made a little sketch : 1.1-Material I'm on a mariana-trench-level budget but I got some ok scraps from a tanner (Is that how it's called?? Where they sell leather hides?? :-S ), some black ones and a big beige piece. No idea of the animal or type, but they'll do right now :-) It's not a very thick material so I won't be sewing by hand, but by machine. I'll try to follow this type of process: That means skiving the leather to finish the sides, either with a hand tool or using a dremel. QUESTION: In the video they use "water based glue". Any idea of which could that be? I'll be using a regular one that I can find easily, anyway. FABRIC: Should I use cotton, nylon, polyester...? All the wallets I've looked into seem to have some kind of nylon fabric. Next steps: drawing the pattern (using autocad), uploading some photos of the leather.

Hello again everybody! I've come straight to the source because you guys have never let me down. I've been planning on making quivers for archery, and I ran into a problem that I didn't quite see coming. I didn't anticipate th difficulties of trying to sew long stitch lines down the side of the quivers. I googled for this, but all I really found were either the lacing method or ones sewn on sewing machines. How is this possible? I wanted to make one similar to this (Image from Rasherquivers): How can you machine sew that long stitch down the center like that? I must be missing something. Experts, please chime in! Thanks!
