Hello Everyone! I picked up leatherworking a few months ago, and this is a holster and magazine pouch I made for a longtime friend/customer of mine. I work as a gunsmith and shooting instructor, and have always put a lot of care into gear selection. I have a lot of vintage leather pistol gear, and finally decided I should start making my own. I’ve found JLS Leather’s patterns to be a world of help, and a wonderful starting place to develop and grow my skills before tackling my own designs and drawing from other sources. I love Kramer holsters, and have been using a lot of very old DeSantis holsters for a number of years (their pre-makers mark ones, and their “LI,NY” stamped holsters, probably from the 70’s-80’s), and want to recreate some of their older designs and build quality. DeSantis is local, so I have seen many of their holsters for years. Any suggestions, criticism, etc would be greatly appreciated! I’ve chosen to do much of the work by hand; saddle stitched with KS Blade Punch pricking irons, cut with a Vergez Blanchard round knife, edges beveled, sanded and burnished by hand, etc. I am having difficulty using the JLS patterns regarding fitment due to stitching spacing, so I stitched the left side above the sights first, molded around the gun, then stitched beneath the trigger guard. I switched to Fiebing’s Pro Dye and it’s helped greatly over the standard alcohol dye. Leather is Hermann Oak craftsman grade. -Brian

Need help with Double Mag Jig
Ozzjim posted a topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Hello Learned and helpful Leather guru's I am a holster-maker, always tell folks I don't make double mag holders, never tell them I am too dense in the Pumpkin to figure out how to make the jig for a double. Yesterday I got in my general purpose shop and made some better single mag jigs, I attempted to make a few doubles. I make the singles by attaching a formed wood mag pattern to a board, I cut out a (Hard Plastic) cutting board of my wife's for the top, (I don't think she has missed it yet..) a U-shaped piece slightly larger than the wood bottom, then press the leather in-between. works OK. My question is how do you folks pattern the doubles? The center forming piece for the top has me stumped, the middle is so thin, I don't think my cutting board top will be strong enough to press it down on the wet leather so I can hold pressure. Help!!!!! Jim, Lost in Missouri and thank you for your help. -
Cleaning out around here, now at the next 'stage' Got some gun magazines used for photo purposes. Never used for actual molding, though they certainly COULD be if desired. I'll list these as I dig them out. Shipping depending on how many you need. PayPal works, or I might trade for blueguns in models I don't have. For the moment, I have : PAIR of Colt 1911 .45, never used for anything other than photographing leather mag carriers: $20 PAIR ONE Glock 43 magazine, never used for anything other than photographing leather mag carriers $25 TWO Glock 43 pancake style mag carriers. Almost finished.... just burnish the edge, apply finish, and use or sell. Pay no attention to the green tint from the tree outside the window... these are solid BLACK with BLACK stitching $25 PAIR

Here are two pictures of the old "Leather Craftsman" magazine. These were the precursor to "The Leather Craftsman and Saddlers Journal" That are now out there. These are both Sept/Oct and Nov/Dec of 1965. I have had these since I was a little kid. I remember that you would get a years subscription if a kit was bought from Tandy. I still wish we had the prices today that was back then. In the back of one of the magazines it said "Prime #1 Heart-O-Hide." That was a from the butt end for $10.25 for the whole hide. Archery arm guard kit was $1.25 and a zippered gun caddy was $ 5.95 a kit. There was patterns and everything just like today. I thought everyone would enjoy seeing these covers. The reason the printing is backwards is because I took the picture with my computer. The one cover is "The flying Leather Shop" For some reason it has always amused me.
