CFM Frodo Posted April 14, 2023 CFM Report Posted April 14, 2023 I have a rather pricy snapping turtle hide that has more character than a three stooges rerun I only have one shot and do not want to screw it up my plan is to antique the hide with a saddle tan and stain the prominent nodules a black i want the secondary nodules (primary being the lg in the middle) to be a lighter tan than the field so how Do I accomplish this? Quote
Contributing Member fredk Posted April 14, 2023 Contributing Member Report Posted April 14, 2023 I would thin tan dye down real thin and apply it with a brush. Coat by coat, overall a few times then just the main area not going over the secondary nodules, until the main piece has some decent colour to it Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted April 14, 2023 Contributing Member Report Posted April 14, 2023 i don't know. I'm only posting here so you can clarify for the next guy... you want THREE colors in the end? Quote
Contributing Member fredk Posted April 14, 2023 Contributing Member Report Posted April 14, 2023 I read it; 2 colours, one colour being dark and lighter in shade. Light & dark tan and black Quote

Not knowing too much about this type of leather, I have this image of the dye ' bleeding' in all the wrong places and completely screwing it up. Perhaps try the dye you intend using in an inconspicuous spot? Edited April 14, 2023 by Handstitched Quote

Be sure to dab the black off onto paper towel before going to the hide , you can control the amount better. This is just a small piece of hardwood wrapped inside . If you want the ( secondary knobs ) lighter like I understood you to begin with , I would use a very small brush and resist them before applying anything , them same as above . This is how I would go about it but I haven't ever done one Edited April 14, 2023 by Gezzer Quote

Members Handstitched Posted April 15, 2023 Members Report Posted April 15, 2023 A'h aaaah!! Now I see it . Looks great too . The colours really show up the texture quite well . Look forward to the next part. I'm guessing ' snapping turtles' are not easy to catch? ...and dangerous ? hence the cost? 9 hours ago, Frodo said: My wallet is a little slim this month I hear ya We all love what we do, but not how much it costs .
