Help with Seiko Timing Belt

Recommended Posts

Hi, New to forum and I bought a bargain to sew some canvas and leather chafe gear for my sailboat. I bought it as a Consew 255 RB. Any suggestions appreciated.  Rough day today trying to put a new belt on. Almost there but the last "adaptor bearing sleeve " won't come free to allow me room for the new belt insert. My bearing puller can't get behind it. Used a lot of butane and still can't get it the rest of the way. Should I try acetylene? Even the pulley wheel took a lot of effort on a frozen set screw. The bearing came out with a drift and a puller but the adapter sleeve that the bearing fits into needs more work.  IMG_20230430_195234.thumb.jpg.c1bad5af75f7ad6164df386c3b520ab7.jpgIMG_20230427_100753.thumb.jpg.66d3aa46b0147203b78a680233ab27d1.jpgIMG_20230430_193313.thumb.jpg.163ea3805f00f27ad8fab0e0b29231b2.jpgIMG_20230430_193257.thumb.jpg.d02196c8b0974583f9163af4aa04f489.jpgIMG_20230430_152058.thumb.jpg.b15f7d2f3d485af57ca3388911cc8ea6.jpg

After reading the manual I think you are approaching the replacement of the timing belt the hard way. Here is the manual I am referencing for the Consew 255 RB-3 that may help, refer to Page 7 "REPLACEMENT OF THE TIMING BELT"

Kgg, thanks for the link. I have those instructions. The timing belt can't possibly fit through the gap with just the bearing sleeve removed. I need a larger hole so I'm thinking that the bearing adapter had to come out also. See photo.

Yes,the bearing adapter needs to come out I can see one spot where you peened the edge over so you'll need to tap it back in & smooth it down & while your at it run some emery paper all the way around it to clean it up & maybe even take off alittle metal, then oil it & it should slip right out,if not tap it back in & sand some more until it does.

I'd be really leery of using the shaft as a press point to try to pull the sleeve out.  I'd be more inclined to look for a tool you could put around the sleeve and then use some screws through the tool to press on the case.  Kinda like how you take a stuck rotor off.

Looking on amazon, I don't see a specific tool for it.  Something like a bearing puller which doesn't require pressing on the shaft.  I've seen some bearing pullers that use a slip hammer.

Something like this.

The issue is, the more pressure you're put on the end of the shaft, the more it tries to drive though the take up arm and the delicate parts on the needle end.
