Pfaff 145 bobbin/hook troubleshooting

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am looking at this Pfaff 145 for my father in law - I cannot for the life of me work out why the hook is not doing full rotations. I'm not familiar with this machine, and I was hoping someone could take a look at the following two videos and possibly provide some insight? I understand the throat plate needs to be in place for it all to function, however I've taken a video with and without to try and illustrate the issue:

I would guess some set screws on the hook driving gears are loose. I´d tilt back the machine and check what is doing on the in drive train when turning the hand wheel.

Could the safety clutch do that if there is a bunch of thread wound up around the bobbin holder?  My guess a good cleaning and adjustment is all it needs.

If your machine is a Model C or D machine it has a safety clutch. Try resetting the safety clutch. Another problem could be the screws came loose and it put the bobbin gear messing off or a broken tooth.

Thanks everyone - it was the safety clutch being activated because the hook could not rotate due to being jammed deep underneath with thread and having no oil after sitting for a long time. I was able to pry it apart, clean, oil and then it all started working again and I was able to continue on doing some pre-war vehicle upholstery repairs. Thank you!

Glad it was simple!  I had a 145 but was able to find a 545 very close to home in better shape.  Finding a newer 1245 would be my ultimate machine.  Overall they are built like tanks, once you set them up they go for ever.
