Members Leather2 Posted October 28, 2024 Members Report Posted October 28, 2024 I have this gomph french edger, i was wondering how to tell if this is one of the original gomph tools, or one of the ones made by Ellis Barnes. I am not sure what size it is because it has no marking besides the name "GOMPH" Thanks, JC Quote
Members MarshalWill Posted October 30, 2024 Members Report Posted October 30, 2024 You may want to contact Lonnie Height, who is running the show now at Gomph-Hackbarth. I talked to him about a year ago and he was still selling tools. 520-642-3891 or on his Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/people/Gomph-Hackbarth-Tools/100021212726476/ . He might be able to answer your question. Quote
Moderator bruce johnson Posted October 31, 2024 Moderator Report Posted October 31, 2024 It is not original. Original would be marked differently and different handle. Gomph maxed out at a size #8 and 1/2 inch width. This is one that Gene Pepples made for Ellis. Quote
Members MarshalWill Posted October 31, 2024 Members Report Posted October 31, 2024 Bruce, I see 4 Gomph French Edgers in your inventory. Are those originals? Quote
Moderator bruce johnson Posted November 1, 2024 Moderator Report Posted November 1, 2024 Yes they are originals - rosewood handles and original Gomph name and size markings. The versions Gene made for Ellis had hardwood handles and a bit different shape. Quote

Members MarshalWill Posted November 1, 2024 Members Report Posted November 1, 2024 Thank you, Bruce. I suspected they were. They're nice looking tools. Quote
CFM Tim Schroeder Posted Monday at 09:49 AM CFM Report Posted Monday at 09:49 AM I have this set I got off EBay. The seller said they were James Jackson’s son and he was selling some of his tools. 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4”, and 7/8”. Marked Gomph with no numbers. They were unbelievably sharp when I got them. I used them to make the welt channel on boot insoles and they cut thru insole leather like a hit knife thru butter. Now you can almost alive paper with them. Quote
