Members RipVanWinkle Posted Saturday at 08:22 PM Members Report Posted Saturday at 08:22 PM (edited) Hi all, I’ve been prototyping and experimenting with some things for a hat and I’ve gotten to the part I’ve dreaded, tweaking a pre-existing hat pattern, and I’m faced with the issue of the fit and the measurements, I want the top and bottom measurements to be the same but I just need it a bit taller, I’m not a smart man so my approach was to just cut it and see if I could Macgyver a solution, I don’t this that was the approach I should’ve done, anyone have any advice or pointers? any and all is appreciated! pic related, pls excuse the mess that is my workbench Edited Saturday at 08:32 PM by RipVanWinkle Quote
AlZilla Posted Saturday at 10:00 PM Report Posted Saturday at 10:00 PM Well, that's similar to the way I've seen sewing patterns altered. Did you try just making a straight across cut? It looks like the top half is now wider than the bottom but that just makes no sense ... Definitely following this one. Quote

Your response is pretty comforting, not gonna lie, I’m pretty stumped on what to do, I’m not sure if making it a straight cut would change but i may try it, I’m a caveman when it comes to figuring out computers so i wanna try to do this by hand if i can. Members DieselTech Posted Saturday at 11:08 PM Members Report Posted Saturday at 11:08 PM Why can't you add the heighth on the top of the hat pattern like you want. Then just modify the top part of the pattern/cap. It will be a bit smaller at the top, but keep the headband size unchanged. Quote
Members DieselTech Posted Saturday at 11:14 PM Members Report Posted Saturday at 11:14 PM This is my ugly art work off my phone. But add the height you want to the top of the pattern. Hopefully you can see/understand what I mean. Quote

Hopefully you can see/understand what I mean. That may be as easy as anything. The top piece would then have to be shrunk a little and the stitching holes re-aligned. I've worked with a couple of hat patterns like this one and the hole count is critical. I've used 1/8" craft foam sheets to mock up patterns. This looks like a perfect use case. Quote
Members BlackDragon Posted yesterday at 12:59 AM Members Report Posted yesterday at 12:59 AM You're on the right path so far. You need to keep the top and bottom lines the same length. If you dont the brim and top would have to be resized. Your side angles have to change a little. All you have to is draw a line from your new top corner to your bottom corner on both sides. To be sure it works just mock it up and make sure your lines meet up. Quote

I did just that and it all still lines up! thanks! Quote
