Hey all.  I picked up a Cobra Class 4 not too long ago.  I love this machine.  It makes sewing thick veg great.  I routinely make saddle bags and pouches so this was a great edition.

I had a thought to try to sew some of the thicker oil and chrome tan pouch projects I have, 3-5 layers over a 1/4 inch thick total, but the stitch on the top side of the project is way to deep but otherwise fine.  Its like a ditch.  The bottom stitch is perfect.  Knots are good and centered.  I did have to modify the foot pressure a bit but I expected that.  I get that the leather is softer but this is not what I expected would happen, really.  I've tried playing with the tension but that  resulted in messing up the knots and stitch.  Is there some way to adjust to make this work on this machine?

You are probably using the Schmetz S point needles that came with the machine. It's their nature to create a submerged appearance on top because of their geometry. Order you some diamond point needles and the stitches will lay more on top and appear longer. Some are 3 sided and some are 4 sided. Their holes are closer in appearance  to round points than the S points are. You might even be able to use round point needles with chrome tan leather. I use them all the time when I sew embroidered patches onto leathers. But, they're done on smaller walking foot and patcher machines.

Idk if a narrow feed dog & plate could help eliminate some of your stitching issues.

As mentioned the diamond point or LR point needles, don't seem to pull the stitches down as deep as a S point needle.
