I’m very new to leatherwork and After tinkering around with an old singer 7-34 and learning its limitations while having had the opportunity to use a cobra class 4 I’m at the point of looking to buy a modern machine. I’m looking at the cobra class 4 since I’ve  had the opportunity to use one and am familiar with it. I’m open to other machines but am hesitant to order one I haven’t use. No matter which machine I choose I need to order a machine since I’m not close to any dealers. Does anyone have recommendations on who to order a cobra from or any other helpful suggestions. I could order one thru my local Tandy and may do so l. Thanks

Leathermachineco.com is a forum sponsor and Cobra dealer. While I haven't done business with them personally, they enjoy an excellent reputation.

If you look through recent threads, this exact question was recently asked and the user went with Leather Machine Co over Tandy.

If you have a local Tandy, you might save the shipping.

Agreed!  Bob sells Cowboy sewing machines and the 4500 is supposed to be very close to a class 4.  I bought my 4500 from him and am very pleased with it and the service.

I have had a Cowboy cb4500 since 2012. I bought it from Toledo Industrial Sewing Machines. One of my best friends bought a Cobra Class 4 in 2011. They have the same capabilities and capacities. We both use these machines multiple times every week; sometimes on a daily basis. As long as you keep them oiled, including opening the left faceplate cover to get to the internal crank shafts, they should keep sewing for decades.

Note, that there are many accessories available for both of these heavy stitchers. Most are available from the primary dealers. Others are made by custom shops, like extra narrow feed dogs and throat plates, which allow you to sew narrow straps or thinner work than the original equipment was built for. My buddy and I both have narrow feeders and throat plates and leave them in most of the time. I only restore the originals if I am going to sew something with #346 thread and a #26 needle.

Jonathon,

You have used a Cobra 4 and comfortable with it, you live in Oregon. Want to save shipping and get a few hundred dollar discount? Leather Machine Co will be at the Pendleton Leather show at the end of October. If you can wait that long. There ya go.  Show discount and no shipping. They will tag one for you, bring it to the show, sit you down, and take time to show you whatever you need to know for as long as it takes. They will then take the head off the table, shuttle it all out, and securely pack it into your vehicle. Probably give you free stuff too.

If you have never been to a show, Pendleton is a good one to get your feet wet. It is not one of the bigger shows with a feeding frenzy of leather workers. It is a steady easier pace for us vendors. The Leather Machine Co guys are not over run like some shows and have time to spend. If you go, I am usually across the way from them and have free candy, rulers, and stickers - along with some other stuff like tools.

Thank you for the replies. I appreciate the feedback and will look into the different brands and companies. It’s helpful to have some personal recommendations. I’m in Oregon near Eugene. Pendleton is a drive but definitely worth thinking about.
 Thanks

Jonathan
