Members Darren8306 Posted June 5 Members Report Posted June 5 Hi everyone! I have a need for a leather item, but don't know how to do it. A holster for bear spray. This is for various purposes, but a most challenging aspect is to use it when running. (either on a belt, or clipped to a run-belt or hydration vest) It would also be used hiking, or just around camp. May I ask to see your designs for such things? Thanks very much. Quote

Pretty and solid, but I might find it bouncing too much when we run. 1 hour ago, fredk said: Cos we don't have bears I miss read the title as 'Hair spray' Show us the container and we will come up with at least a dozen designs product on sale here There are many ways to skin a cat, but a really big win would be one that can serve in all situations, and can take being sweated on near-daily by a corrosive old chubby guy. It's downright abusive of me really. At the same time, it would be dainty enough to please the aesthetic constraints of a girl I like. Quote

Lol it is very tight to the body, but i doubt you would want to jog with it very far. Considerations for your project: In my opinion, decide first how you want your holster to work. Repeatability when the mind can't think straight is the key word in all emergency-related matters. Does the holster come off with the spray can, or does the holster stay attached to the person? You can't have it both ways, the holster has to stay where it's intended, either firmly attached to you or the can. After that decision, positioning is next obvioulsy, you want it where you can reach it and use it without thinking. set those parameters, then we can figure out a good design. I will add here the liability factor of making things that may have to save a life, so I won't design anything for you that may get me sued, but I will give advice and ideas for you to design your own bear spray holster. You need to treat this spray just as you would any defensive weapon intended for the same purpose. Always carried in the same spot and train to that, so thinking is not required to get it in hand or use. If the holster stays with the can, then it has to fit tightly with no slippage and have a quick release of some type. If the holster stays on your person, then a loose fit on the can and a good, tight fit and strong attachment to the body, so the can will come out without hesitation. The case can have multiple attaching points for positioning for different folks to use, but using and wearing it personally should be the same every time. I've considered this problem many times, as I do a lot of outdoor activities, fishing, hunting, and such. I was stuck on just how to hit a mad running bear over my shoulder while also running as fast as possible, jumping over deadfall, dodging tree branches, and screaming at the top of my lungs. The only sound solution I came up with was to never go alone and always with a person I could outrun. The only sound solution I came up with was to never go alone and always with a person I could outrun. I've run with Alaskans who use a firearm as bear spray. Their method was to have the non-running partner pace the one training on a bike, carrying the extra weight. I don't remember which one they chose, but the one that had enough stopping power for their local hazards, was too much extra weight to run with regularly. Repeatability does sound like a critical piece, especially when it is so seldom used. My thought was the can having some kind of cover or 'glove', which itself mates with a belt or receiver on the person, also leaving room to carry it in hand (hand strap?) for short jaunts (5k run or small hike) or set it on a table in camp. A great place to wear it would be on the lower back, sideways, to be slid out with the dominant hand. (right in both our cases). This would allow the person running behind similarly easy access. That's likely the best place for running, minimizing bouncing would constrain it a bit further, perhaps fixing it at both ends of the can. While I can sometimes outrun my sweetheart, I hope my stubbornness prevents such. I know it prevents inviting others along on some of our romantic forest runs. Bringing along a 'bait-runner' isn't always practical, so I'll have to do my best with planning this. We run with belts already, for the dogs leash, phone, water bottle and whatnot, and the belt area can get busy. We sometimes run with hydration vests, but that is only for longer efforts of an hour+ We also have a teeny 'coyote spray' for in town. We just started seeing coyotes up this way, and I've been followed by one, for about a km before I decided to run it off. It never got close enough to spray, but if I was shorter, it might have been braver. Maybe I should start with that, as a practice round. I feel my skills are a bit below 'rudimentary' at times. Design, by the way, is about the most daunting part for me. Found a way to insert the image... Quote
AlZilla Posted June 6 Report Posted June 6 If it's that super critical, I'd want it on a chest rig in some kind of spring retention holster. It looks like a person could grab it with their index finger and pull it loose. Maybe up on my left shoulder to grab with my right hand. The drawback would be an accidental discharge would be pretty bad that close to someone's face. It took me a while to figure out you meant running as in exercise, not fleeing from a bear and trying to spray over your shoulder.
