esantoro Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 Does anyone know of a good glue for adhering heavy denim to leather? I would like to make a leather briefcase with a denimn lining, but the Duals 88 contact cement I have doesn't seem to work very well. Thanks, Ed Quote
Members $$hobby Posted April 15, 2007 Members Report Posted April 15, 2007 i use BARGE for bonding my leather projects. However, with the denim being more or less porus, i would to a test sample to verify the barge wounldnt soak thru the denim. btw, have you thought about how rough the denim would be for the contents of the brief case? just a thought Quote

It works wonderfully. I'm growing rather disappointed with the Duals 88 contact cement, which I thought would bond anything. In addition to bonding heavy denim to the flesh side of veg tanned, I also need to bond two layers of 4oz veg tanned for straps and belts, with stitching down the edges. The Duals 88 doesn't form that strong of a bond. I thought contact cement would hold anything. Does anyone else use the white tanners bond cement and have good experiences with it? It seems that a thin layer of it is all you need to form a firm bond. Ed Quote
Ambassador Don101 Posted April 25, 2007 Ambassador Report Posted April 25, 2007 i have used in the past a white wood glue which also worked it took a little longer to dry but is was a cheeper alternative to the expencive leather glues Quote
Moderator Art Posted April 25, 2007 Moderator Report Posted April 25, 2007 Hi Ed, Yes I use Fiebing's Tanners Bond on most stuff, it does not bond instantly and the two pieces can be shifted a little if need be. I do use Barge general purpose for things that might take a while in assembly as I can reactivate it with a heat gun if it dries or if I need the instant bond of a contact cement. If you use Barge, buy a can of thinner too, you will invariably need it. The Tanners bond kind of grows on you, but I suspect most white glues (aliphatic resin) work about the same. I sure don't miss the fumes from the Barge. Art I just tried Fiebing's Tanners bond cement (white glue). It works wonderfully. Members mulefool Posted May 25, 2007 Members Report Posted May 25, 2007 I make quite a bit of pack equipment so I do a fair amount with canvas. I really like the Val A Tearmender latex glue. I use it to glue the leather reinforcements to the canvas. I use Barge when glueing leather to leather. But I sure like the Tearmender and there's no toxic fumes. I've probably saved a couple hundred brain cells since I switched to that. Quote
