Thread

Recommended Posts

Thus far in my watch strap making hobby, I've used some Irish Waxed Linen Thread that I found here http://www.royalwoodltd.com/cat14-17aw.htm. I've used both the 7 cord and 4 cord for smaller projects. Is there a better product that would be suited for straps? What I am finding now after having made a few is that the thread is becoming much darker, flatter, and frayed. Especially in the area that goes into the buckle. Should I be using nylon or so other thread in this situation?

Brent,

Wild guess here, based on observation and what the experts tell me...

I don't see a stitching groove. Is there one and I'm not seeing it? From what I understand, the groove allows the thread to lay below the surface of the leather, thus protecting it from abrasion. Ask around, but that may be the key rather than type of thread.

Good luck! The stitching looks great by the way.

Brent (yeah, there's two of us!)

It doesn't look like waxed linen. Did you make the band in the bottom picture? If so, you might with a smaller thickness and run a stitching channel on the next one you make. It looks like that thread may have also picked up some of the dye/stain used on the strap. Without more details, it would be hard to make an intelligent (or as close as I'm going to get to intelligent) assessment. Good looking work, though.

That is nice thread. It looks like 346 to me. Does anyone know if the Linhanyl that Artisan sells holds up as well?

346 Nylon, reverse twist needle or N&A with awl set at 45, real tight laid thread like the new Chinese threads.

Can anyone point me to a place that sells various color 346 Nylon? I searching on google and most places just had the basic colors like white and black.

Artisan seems to have a large selection and good prices right now.
