I have an order for a knife sheath, pancake style, for a knife that the customer provided for me to use in custom fitting. I have made sheaths for things, and I know that a welt is a good thing to protect the stitches. I've found a few patterns for pancake style sheaths, but they usually seem to be two pieces of leather glued together and stitched ... with no welt.

I was thinking three layers? the middle layer is the welt?

Go with what you know to be the better construction; use a welt

pancakes are mostly used for folding knives, so dont need a welt. For a non folder make your welt thinner than the blade so there is some tension built in.

Worked in a prison for 30 years if I aint shiny every time I comment its no big deal, I just don't wave pompoms.

Ok - I will think about this for a bit. If I remember, I'll post pictures of what I wind up doing for constructive criticism :)

In case anyone was interested, I attached some photos. I punched the holes through the back piece before gluing. Once I cut the holes and trimmed the uneven parts, it looked ... bad ... I also messed up a few other things. Gave it to the guy to try out. If he liked it, I told him I'd make him another one that wasn't messed up.

The guys that I have made them for like about an inch or so of the handles(scales) in the sheath for better retention.  Most of these guys are "cowboys" of one form or another.  The rest of their lives are a bit rough and tumble.  This helps the knife to still be there when they need it.  JM2C, Jim

Thanks, I had seen a couple like that. This one was like that because of a cutting disaster that I was able to sorta recover from. My intent was to have something like that.
