MADMAX22 Report post Posted February 23, 2009 Hey guys I know this is pretty simple beginner stuff or should be lol but I have never really learned how to properly end a lacing job that doesnt have two layers of leather. I know every book I read seems to have the lacing joining eachother at the end and I understand how to join them up to end it but what happens when you dont rejoin the beginning and just end at say the edge of a gusset or something. This is mainly for the double and triple I guess but any others are welcome. I have been just lacing as far as I can then running back under a few laces and cutting it off but am not sure if there is another way to hide that at all. Thanks for any input. I think that when you lace through the last hole available, you just come out between the leathers and up through the lacing on the edge, cut it off and tuck that tab under the lacing. HarryB Report post Posted February 25, 2009 Ehhhhhhhh, not quite that simple. Its almost impossible to verbalize; you have to see it. Get any lacing book and it will illustrate it very well. If you still have problems, go to a TLC store and ask someone to show you. It really is a little tricky until you see it done.
DCKNIVES Report post Posted February 25, 2009 I think the problem Max is having is the same all of us doing knife sheaths have. When we make the sheath body it is glued and the edges finished before lacing and sewing are started, so coming between the layers as shown in the book are useless.I too get to the end and and run it under the previous lacing and cutoff an inch back or so.That's why it also makes splicing so difficult on a sheath or holster.Dave

You're right Harry, I just got a chance to look in my lacing book and it says when you are not lacing completely around a project...when ending, go through the last slit, then under the bight, and then go through the last slit again, but through the front only, coming out between the leathers and back a few stitches, trim off excess. (I knew I was pretty close though) Edited February 25, 2009 by Rawhide
freak Report post Posted February 25, 2009 How can you go between the leathers when there is only one piece of leather ??? how to properly end a lacing job that doesnt have two layers of leather.
Wyvern Report post Posted February 25, 2009 I lace to the last hole, at the last hole I do the full lace sequence twice so the end is out the back of the final hole. Then run the needle back under the lace on the back side abour an inch or so and cut it off.
Rawhide Report post Posted February 25, 2009 (edited) How can you go between the leathers when there is only one piece of leather ??? You know, I read that twice and missed the part where he stated one piece of leather... all you do when a single piece is used is after you go through the last hole the second time, you run the needle under the last few stitches on the back of the leather, and trim off. Sorry about that Max. Edited February 25, 2009 by Rawhide
MADMAX22 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 Hey thanks a bunch guys, Ive been away for a few days goofing off lol. OK so thats what I was basically doing with running back thru and trimming off on the back side of the leather. I just thought for some reason that there was some other way of doing it that I hadnt thought of yet. And yes it is the same for either one piece of leather or like Dave mentioned for the glued layers which is allways what I seem to be into when lacing.
