Plastic for ID cover

Your help please. I want to make some wallets that have a see through window for the ID. What kind of plastic is it? Where can I buy a couple of sheets? How thick should it be?

Lexan is good because it doesn't scratch easily. I think regular polycarbonates scratch easilt. Any plastics distributor like Cadilac Plastics will have it. If you don't think it needs to be that tough, you can get paper protector in office supply store like Office depot.

We use clear plastic available from Hobby Lobby in the material department. It comes in various thickness and is very pliable and easy to sew. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. There's not a Hobby Lobby in LA, is there a brand name on the plastic you buy besides Hobby Lobby?

Just a stray thought, but I had some leftover clear material I used to make windows in a jeep top I rebuilt - years ago. It sewed up nicely, was crystal clear and very tough - and if you can wrangle up an automotive upholstery show near you, they may have some. Look for it to be over twenty bucks a yard.

Steve, you're thinking of the flexible stuff, right, not the rigid plastic? I make luggage tags with see-through windows using clear vinyl plastic sheet you can buy at any fabric store. (Same stuff as Liz mentioned.) WallyWorld also carries it. It's a fairly tough material and you can sew through it.

The Local ACE Hardware carries acrylic in 8x10 sheets ind various weights...your local one may also.
