Tkleather1 Report post Posted November 9, 2009 Hey guys and gals, I just wanted to give a newer knife maker a plug. Last year I went to the Pendleton show and was overwealmed with all of the options of tools to buy and came out of there with only a few things and as it turned out they were very nice things from Barry king but not at all what I really needed. Well this year I went down there with a very limited budget but with a few things that I had to have (if I could afford it). Well I ended up buying a swivel knife from Barry King. I understand what some of you are thinking,"Lana smith was there, why didnt you buy one of the old smoothie knives?" Well I really like the feel of the Knives but they are WAY to long for me. I have pretty small hands and she didnt have the Smaller size that I needed so I will possibly get one of the smaller ones in a month or so, I liked the blade on Barry's knife just from playing with it there ar the show, with a little stroping I think it will be a night and day difference between his and my old Stohlman knife and blade, I like the stohlman knife well enough but not the blade at all. Next I bought a new head knife, I bought this head knife from a man named Brett Bronson, from Libby Montana. I talked to Brett a little bit last year but just couldnt pull the trigger on the knife. Well this year I went and talked to him again and found out that his knives are all 100% hand cut, shaped tempered and sharpened. They are a full tang tool steel knife with a hollow grind. theses knives at the show were 115.00. I came home and tried it out with some 8/9 veg tan that I have been having trouble cutting cleanly with my old osborn knife. This knife just glides right through it and here is the real kicker, It fits my hand nice and feels nice and balanced. I am very pleased with this knife and Brett is a Super nice guy. He told me if I have any trouble with this knife not holding an edge or any other trouble just to give him a call and send it back and if he cant fix the problem he will send me another knife. Sorry for the long rant but I am very pleased with my purchases and I will be happy to give you Mr. Bronsons contact info. There were lots of vendors there I would name them but I dont want to leave anyone out I did look at a stitcher that steve had there and all I can say is WOW that is a super nice and clean machine with every detail covered. I need to save up some more pennies though before I can pull that trigger. I will get some pictures of my Knives up a little bit later today. MADMAX22 Report post Posted November 9, 2009 Pics are allways welcome. Something about round knives, once you use them you tend to want more of them lol.
electrathon Report post Posted November 9, 2009 Tim, You posted that you were going to be there a few days ago. I was looking for a guy with a wife and a kid, but did not find you. I was there Saturday morning. I did buy an Old Smothie knife So far have not had any time to use it except what I did at the show. I think I got the last small one she had, I have small hands too. I also got an edge burnisher, and a few bevelers from Barry King. Had a lot of fun there. There was a better tool makers turn out over last year, but I too was on a limited budget. Spencer G Report post Posted November 13, 2009 On the subject of new knives. Has anyone had a chance to get a hand on any of the new Al Stohlman knives from Tandy? I haven't been all that impressed with the the Stohlman tools I've used previously, but these look like they might have promise.

The ones that I have been around will not hold an edge just sitting on the bench let alone tryin to use them.
MADMAX22 Report post Posted November 15, 2009 I have one of the regular stainless al stohlman knives and rarely use it any more if at all. It wont hold a edge for more then a few cuts. My rose knife and dan carlos knife are what I primarily use. Now that new damascus steel one they are selling I am not sure about. I looked up the steel they say they are using for it and seems to be a big hit in kitchen knives but not sure if it is any good or not. I probably wont spend the money to find out. They look nice though.
Elliot Report post Posted November 22, 2009 I also picked up that head knife at Pendleton. It is holding the edge well, and fits my hand well. Well worth every penney payed for it. Also got a Douglas Long Chuck and 2 Awl Blades. A real pleasure to use.

TheLegend Report post Posted November 4, 2013 I also was at the Pendleton Leather Show this year, and was on the hunt for a New round knife. This was the First leather show i have ever been too, and it was Great getting hands on, on all the products for sale. Spent a lot of money, but very please with what i bought. So, i first looked at the Wrangler knives. I know they are spendie, but i was determined to get a new head knife. Was inpressed with wrangler. But it was the first day of the show, so i did my class and looked around on sat. I had talked with Brett on Fri. and handled his knife and like it. Also like the price. Ran across a gal in my class that had bought one of Bretts knives the previous year and liked it. Went back to Brett and talked a while longer. Bretts knives arent cheap either. But they are half of Leather Wranglers. So i bought one, and so far, love it. It's nice having a solid quality knife in your hand while cutting leather. I would recommend a knife from Bret Bronson for sure.
