  1. are they available for sale? Will they punch through two layers of leather gluded together?
  2. The machine is a Cowboy 3500 using #277 thread and #25 needle. I can't just put a new color thread and take right off . I always have to play with till if will sew right.
  3. I have a heck of a time adjusting the tension, both bobbin and top threads. Sometimes I even get loops on top of the belt. It seems that every time I change thread colors I have to start the adjustment all over again. Is there a book out there anywhere addressing leather machine sewing?
  4. I seam to have a lot of trouble adjusting the tension of the bobbin and top thread. Sometimes I get loops on top. When I do get it to sew right and have to change colors I have to start all over again with the tension. I have a cowboy 3500 using 277 thread and #25 needles. I didn't think you should have to readjust the tension every time.
  5. I'll give that a try . Thanks
  6. I've been trying to sew a belt with two rows of stitching but when I get to the point and try to continue down the other side the stitching never goes around the point and comes outlooking bad. How do the big belt makers have it look so nice at the point? Jerry

It also helps to oil the leather first.

Skidmores Leather Cream or Dr. Jacksons Hide Rejuv before final assembly will help. They will darken the leather some however.

I learned that spraying the area you are folding with warm water and a little dish soap helps keep the leather on the surface of the bend from crac king. I also will use a french skiver to take just a little off the area of the bend on the flesh side. Of course I have had some pre-cut belt blanks that cracked no matter what I did, just cheap leather.

  15. I saw a holster that was carved and painted to match the grips on a 1911 gun . Can't find it now. Can you help?
  16. How do you engrave a holster that has been formed for a gun? Do you tool the leather first and then form it to the gun? When I try to tool the leather and then form it to the gun, most every thing is lost.
  17. I think you did a outstanding job looks very good.
  18. What is the trick to making a good grove that you can sew into? I try and I try and I still can't make it look right.. I'm using a tool from Tandy that has a deal on it to keep your grove so far away from the edge. It's also removable so you can free hand it.
  19. I did help one of my buddies put together a western holster way back in 1959. There wasn’t to much to do on base, so we went to the hobby shop. I also made a bag for my Mom and some wallets, but they were kits from Tandy. This is the first thing I have done from just a big sheet of leather.
  20. I'll try to post a picture of the First Holster I have ever made.
