Contributing Member Jordan Posted April 11, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted April 11, 2008 I just started this project today, I used an old pair of flipflops that fit me pretty good for a pattern and I plan on a stationary looped heel strap and a one piece ajustable strap and buckle to hold um on my feet. I may have some trouble in the toe area as I think the slots are alittle too close together. Quote
Timbo Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 I think the toe loop will be okay. It will conform over time and ultimately give more control ove the end of the sandal. Be sure and post up the finished product. Tim Quote
Contributing Member Jordan Posted April 12, 2008 Author Contributing Member Report Posted April 12, 2008 (edited) 2 steps forward 1 step back, 37" of 3/4 strap is to short by about 5", back to tandy for a couple of longer ones. So far they are coming together nicely and is turning into a real learning/problem solving project. I also find that my strap channels need to be deeper so the foot pad is not so bumpy, I have very tender tootsies I guess LOL Edited April 12, 2008 by Jordan Quote
Ambassador Luke Hatley Posted April 12, 2008 Ambassador Report Posted April 12, 2008 Jordan you have it going your way... what type of soles will you put on them.. Goodyear - Michilin or Firestone ................ seriously they look great. at your local shoe shop you could buy Creep Soles that you could glue with Barge or Masters Cement . that would make some fine sandals.. Contributing Member Jordan Posted April 12, 2008 Author Contributing Member Report Posted April 12, 2008 Thanks, I haven't decided on the bottoms yet crepe sounds good. I thought about all kinds of things like hobnails, rivets, tooled ridges, rubber poundo board or just leave them plain leather and wear them out while planning my next new and improved pair. I think I'll call them Heyzueschristos. Quote
Grunt Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Nicely done!! I may have to try making a pair for myself to wear around the house. Quote
TomSwede Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Wow I'm imressed with those. That is such a clean design. Those should be able to find their way into customers hands. Tom Quote

Contributing Member Jordan Posted April 13, 2008 Author Contributing Member Report Posted April 13, 2008 I have to dig out their catalog, where did I stash it oh yea on the botom of the stack LOL thanks. Birk's would be high class, the envy of all. I picked up the right length straps today and am going to start sewing them together tomorrow. Quote
Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted April 13, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted April 13, 2008 For the soles, why not go to a tire store and see if they'll give you a used tire? Or a flat? Jig or band saw should cut it nicely, then it's glue time. Quote
Contributing Member Jordan Posted April 15, 2008 Author Contributing Member Report Posted April 15, 2008 One down one to go, really fits nice, a little olive oil to soften them up and I may not get any blisters, makes you feet smell like a Greek Salad! Quote
Members Myriam Posted April 15, 2008 Members Report Posted April 15, 2008 I've been following your progress on these. Nice work! Had always wondered how they were made. Now I know! Quote
Kevin King Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 That is just down right COOL! A sandal with a built in watch! I want a pair! All kidding aside. Looks like a very professional job, I am very impressed. KK Quote
Contributing Member Jordan Posted April 16, 2008 Author Contributing Member Report Posted April 16, 2008 Finished sewing, still need some edge treatment and olive oil/sunlight to darken. I think they may be a good seller this summer. Quote
Members Myriam Posted April 16, 2008 Members Report Posted April 16, 2008 I agree indeed. They look real cool and from what I see on the straps, I think the olive oil is going to give them a really nice color. Good work, Jordan! Quote
Timbo Posted April 20, 2008 Report Posted April 20, 2008 What did you use to cut the strap channels??? Tim Quote
Contributing Member Jordan Posted April 24, 2008 Author Contributing Member Report Posted April 24, 2008 I used one of those hand V gouges to get the line straight on each channel then carved out the recess with a french edger. Quote
esantoro Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 OTB sells birkenstock soles I tried once asking OTB about the Birkenstock parts. They told me I needed special authorization to buy those products. Ed Quote
Members Caddata Posted June 2, 2008 Members Report Posted June 2, 2008 You may have allready found this site, but here's a site for outer soles. Harold Quote

Members Seamus Posted January 2, 2009 Members Report Posted January 2, 2009 Here I go again.... my second post on the forum and I'm awaking another long dead thread. I love these sandels, and I now want to make a set of my own (and one for the bride unit). They seem like a pretty straight forward project, but I find myself curious as to weight and type of leather you used for the straps and the footbed/sole. Oh... and I could definately see myself adding some Vibram soles to these. Outstanding work, Jordan! Quote
