Stewart Report post Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) Well where do I begain. It all started with a new granite slab or it could have been the leather belt strap.i am using. Nothing is going right. The swivel knife does not seem to cut deep enough-the belever is compressing enough. Works look like they never been cut but just stamped. Like i woke up with 2 left hands.and started brand new. I know that i am not great but it suits me and i have begun t to do a litle better. the projects i try to do are difficult as is but why walk aroud a swamp when you can just plow through it. I guess i need to walk away from leather for a while and do some dreamcatchers but pounding leather is addictive and relaxing and keeps me a way from yard work Do i feel better now ? Yesssss If i told this to my wife she would have a weeks work of around homeof things to do. So this way i can sound off and not beloaded down with real work. Thanks Joe Stew. unmad duck.bmp Edited August 20, 2010 by Stewart
CitizenKate Report post Posted August 20, 2010 Sorry to hear of your frustration, Joe... I can certainly sympathize as I've had many occasions when I've wanted to just throw something I'm working on - or the tool - across the room. (Nope, never quite made it to that point. Uh, well, on second thought, I guess there was that cheesy skiver I threw into the trash - LOL!) I agree that this might be a good time to just step away from it for a short while to simmer down. Then, when you come back to it, let's talk about that swivel knife. Sounds like it could use a little work to make it cut better, but we'll save that for later. Meanwhile, go treat yourself to something special and rest assured there are ways to make it better. Kate
Spinner Report post Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) I've had that happen to me a time or two Joe. Take a break to let your mind reboot. One thing I do when that happens is to take a full day away from leatherwork and then the next day spend an hour or two going through some of the beginner & intermediate books just to make myself refresh on whatever it is I'm having issues with. Sometimes we get into such a concentrated mindset with the techniques that take the longest (tooling, braiding, lacing, etc) that we can forget that little step on what should be the easy stuff like casing and swivel knife cuts and it throws things off. Stewart Report post Posted August 21, 2010 Kate_ Chris Thanks Yes a person can walk away and still have a good day. How much better a person feels when they spend money. Sign contract on a new roof than went and started buying ceramic tiles for livingroom. Almost persuaded wife to enclose screened in carport to put work area there and be air condition too. She wants her dinning room table back. After that went to the pond for a two hour float swim.Pulled raft with cold ones behind.. One more day of personal spending and will be ship shape again. (wish Tandy was 2 miles away or closer than the world will be fine) Joe Stew.
alb Report post Posted August 21, 2010 ARe those your emus? Is that a baby one in the picture? Cute! Sounds like you're on the right track, when ready to restart, just shout out and people here will help. One of the cool but also frustrating things about leatherwork is that no two pieces of leather are exactly the same and some can be *really* different. It takes awhile to gain enough experience to deal with them without getting totally frustrated. Take care, Ann
