Hi ArtS

That's sooo cute... Well I guess some dog owner might like it? *SSS*

I just like to make (hopefully) beautiful things. The handle, well it's on a wood base, braided (most of the times) and with a loads of patience and presistans i get the rings and tacks on. As far as I know I'm the only one making handles like this (and have for about 7 years) They have become one of my trademarks so to speak. I trade you the whole secret for teaching me how to build saddles, one of my dreams to learn:-)

Tina,

You are at the right place to learn saddle making too. I think Bruce said he is going to take pictures as he goes on his next one. I think one of the saddle makers on here has a blog too that shows some of the steps he goes through. While I was learning to build saddles, I took step by step pictures of each one because it was easier than taking notes. At one time we were going to post them on here, but I am a little intimidated by the REAL saddle makers on the forum. You can see them if you click on the link to my pictures at the bottom of my posts. You keep telling us how you do what you do and we'll be happy to help teach you what we know too.

A million thanks Clay,

Now I know what to do tonight, there's a lot of photos there:-)

I've been horseback riding the bigger part of my life (but not in cowboy saddles as they're called where I come from) Only a few times in my life I've been up in one and they're comfy to say the least.

Finding this place here in cyberspace have made it possible (at least in my dreams) to exspand, explore and never stop looking over the horizon when it comes to leather. Well, it does help to have a "nagging" daughter with all the faith you can have in her mom saying: "Hey, I want this and that...You can make it, can't you?" The western style guitarr strap is soon finished for her and now she wants a saddle just because I happend to mension my desire to learn how to build one...Gees, they never give you a brake do they, even if they're all grown up? :-) It's like my old granny use to say, "the kids and grandkids is what keeps you young" *S*

Jumping of to visit Clays place, this is going to be interesting...Have a great night//Tina

First off, those are indeed quite astounding. I hope that I am able to make such beautiful things someday (I like the collars in particular ^_^).

I actually have two questions for you, if you have the time to answer them:

1) How long have you been doing leatherwork?

2) What is the red inner layer on those cuffs/how is it installed? It looks really amazing, and I have seen it on many professional retail sites, but I have not the slightest idea of how to go about mimicking it.

Hi Maeshin

and Thanks for looking at my work:-)

How long...I've worked with leather now for around +7 years but the tooling/carving is just a few months old. I got my first tools in october last year for that.

Padding...I make the padding by sewing 2 layers of soft lamb and 1 layer of...(hmmm here's where sometimes my lack of english reminds it self) the type of material you put into quilts or similar. Leaving a small gap I turn it inside out and stich the opening together. I attache this to the cuff/collar or whatever with rivets. IF I had a sewing machine for the heavy leather I would have used that instead but..."You take what you have and make the best of it" :-)

Hope this helps you some//Tina

Wow! You've only been tooling for a few months? That's amazing! You must be a very quick learner ^_^

As to the padding, I think that I know the material you're talking about (though I must confess that I don't know what it's called either). Thanks for the tip ^_^

I'd love to teach you. The only thing is I'm still learning. I'm only on my second saddle. I hope to learn to braid like that someday. You do beautiful work.

Where do you live?

I think I'm a quick learner when it comes to "hands on"...However I read as much as I can before starting something new. Like the tooling part, I probably started to look at it around a year ago, collecting "theoretical knollage" as much as I can before deciding to give it a go. I just love the Internet, it's full of information, a never ending story:-)

ArtSYou have to post up pictures when the second saddle is done.I live in Michigan and I've been i GA a few times...At the airport *SSS* That's one of the big hubs going to Europe/Scandinavia on my way to meet family and friends over there.I give you my best link to braiding. The reason I like this one it's simplified and very easy to follow. All the different types of braiding is at the bottom of the page.

Batting...yeah, that's the one, superthanks Jordan:-)I think maybe fleece and such would work too come to think about it.

Great site! Thanks. I'll be spending some time there. A coworker asked if I could make him a new strap on his necklace. It has a cross on it and is a simple rout, black braid. I say simple but not for me. I'll have to give it a try.

I grew up in Ohio. Glad I'm away from the cold now. It was about 67 today. I don't miss trying to figure out which lump in the snow was my car. My family was from Austria. I was born a year after they came here. I've never been there though. I'd love to see some of their leather work.

Oki, I put them up again...but because of the forum we're in I take some modified pics of the tooling on certain object to be family friendly;-)

beautiful work, i love your flames - really sweet, very dramatic, great color!!

it must be tough working with those tiny tools you show

in your pics...you've got to get yourself some full size ones, working would be so much easier!!

I've never been to Autria either, just in the neighboring countrys, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Sweds have i general a habbit of travelling a lot:-)

Well, now the snow is gone for the third time but more is on the way...The weather here is almost just the same as in Stockholm where I grew up...Just the summers is muggier here and hotter. I can strongly recommend the Scandinavian summer, around 75, no mugginess and the sun is up between 3am to 10.30pm. and it never really gets dark in June/July. However, we do pay dearly for it in the wiinter, then in some areas is only a few hours of daylight/day.

For your friends cross I would suggest a 4 strand round braid in kangaroo. It's way eisier than it looks once you "get it" and quick. Start out with a quarter of an inch leather straps for practice, then you can see how the braid works..."Easy as apple pie"

If you need smaller tools check this site out. They use them to make miniature saddles.

WOW! So where is the unedited adult version? and how does one send Johanna a PM, whatever that is? hahahah -- I feel like I am missing something on the "locked" message group.I too am amazed by the color, Tina. Is it "in" the leather like a dye? or more "on" the leather like a paint? Does it peel if the leather is bent? I was thinking about the durability of the color for tack like headstalls. some of those patterns would certainly add a new twist for the show circuit. :spoton:WOW! To PM Johanna, just click on "My Controls" (upper right-hand corner of this page), then click on "compose new message" (left-hand side of that page). Under "recipient's name" type "Johanna". Then, in the message box, just ask her to unlock the adult board and you should be all set. We look forward to seeing your work ^__^

Hi LadyJ,

There is an adult section, however not unmoderated. I have not had to edit anything so far, but there are lines that folks can't cross. I draw the line at kiddie porn or anything in purely bad taste, however I am very very tolerant and enjoy a healthy adult imagination.

Hi LadyJ,

Well You have to get Johannas user up somewhere, click on the right on her user, select "send message" , or you can go directly to my webpage www.absolutekinky.com all things is up there:-)

I can use either paint or dyes. On the collars I use dye as much as possible (durablility) and then paint ment for letaher (Agelius) so they can be bent left right and centre without peeling. These patterns can of course be made on anything, I just thought they looked cool on the collars and sometime paddles.

Have a great day//Tina
