Trouble Finding A Part For The Servo Motor On My Model 5 Machine

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I decided to fix my neels model 5's motor today. The problem is the speed control shaft has broken and as there is no knob on the outside of the cover I cannot get a screw driver in the non-existing slot anymore. I am having a lot of difficulty trying to find the part which looks to be some type of potentiometer. The motor is a Family ™ Electronic Servo Motor Model # FESM-400 400 watt 110 volt 0-3300 rpm used by a variety of companies and has a neels # tag on it p100501q-2057. Any help locating the part would be greatly appreciated. I am sure it is a part that costs a few bucks and I am not about to buy a new motor for $149.00 Radio Shack has no clue as they are not a hobbyist store anymore. and the local electronics parts place closed down years ago which is not surprising as most people do not build their own stuff anymore.

Call Ryan, don't they have a lifetime warranty?

I imagine they do, but I bought the machine a few years back from Ed Santoro a fellow member, so I don't think my machine qualifies, due to me not being the original owner.

If Neels can't help you go to

http://www.digikey.com/

and search for "500k potentiometer"

You'll have to refine your search in the following pages but you should be able to get a good match.

Not the cheapest place to buy components but they have always carried an extensive stock.

Yeah I would say call Ryan first since it was his machine that was sold, if he cant help ya I can almost guarantee that Bob or Steve at cobra can. If those three cant help ya I am not sure who can. Either way you wont be going wrong by calling any one of them. I bought my cowboy from Neels and Ryan has been a great help with it. I didn't need much but I know he is just a phone call away. Ive chatted with Steve and hes a great guy, bought some parts from Bob for my 211 and hes a very knowledgeable and also a great guy to deal with.

As a very last resort or to hold you over until you can find the part you might try JB weld or steel putty and recut the slot with a cutoff wheel on a Dremel

Thanks for all the responses, I fixed it for the time being with a short piece of rubber fuel line stuck on the broken part and a small threaded knob that extends out of the cover. But I also found that the threaded collar that holds the part on the motor is stripped so it is temporary at best a drop of thread lock helped. seems to work but is very touchy and has only a small area that actually changes the rpm's to adjust to very slow speed.
