Members ASMA Posted August 3, 2011 Members Report Posted August 3, 2011 Received this e-mail. Hello: I have a Vegan friend who is looking for a saddle maker that is willing to construct an entire saddle leather free - the current synthetic saddle available are not sturdy enough for her, etc. Can you recommend someone? Thanks, Erin horsefuzzz@yahoo.com Is anyone up for the challenge? Quote
Members wildrose Posted August 3, 2011 Members Report Posted August 3, 2011 While I am not a saddlemaker, I would say this is probably the wrong place to look for a leather-free saddle (on a leatherworker site). Yet, perhaps someone here could refer the person to a suitable maker. Quote

Members Kevin Posted August 4, 2011 Members Report Posted August 4, 2011 People have been trying to find replacements for leather for a hundred years, nothing comes close. She already knows that. We get Wintec saddles in all the time and they just don't hold up and they absorb everything and stink really bad after a while. I know there are some western makers also. We've gotten some in and they break like cardboard after a while. I think she has to live with the limitations she has placed on herself. Good luck, Kevin P.S. Why would a vegan want to enslave a living being? Quote
Members roo4u Posted August 4, 2011 Members Report Posted August 4, 2011 HA! kevin you took the thought right out of my mind....since most people are vegan because they think slaughter is cruel how can she justify keeping and riding a horse....hmmmm Quote
Members TexasJack Posted August 4, 2011 Members Report Posted August 4, 2011 This one's good for a laugh! What would the world be without those people with too much money and too much time on their hands.................. Quote
Members BIGGUNDOCTOR Posted August 4, 2011 Members Report Posted August 4, 2011 (edited) Do a forum search for Vegan leather, there was quite a discussion on this very subject. The vegan leather being offered was from naturally expired cattle. I am sure that you can find a saddle maker that could use that type of leather. I may not live a vegan lifestyle, and I don't judge anyone who does. I have had many days that I didn't eat any meat, and have cut my meat intake way back. I have a friend who is a vegetarian who showed me that being a veggie killer is not just beans, and rice. Some folks are vegan, some are vegetarians, or ovo-lactose-pescatarians vegetarians, I like to refer to myself as a vagitarian ....... Good luck on your search, and I hope your friend gets the saddle that they want. Edited August 4, 2011 by BIGGUNDOCTOR Quote
Members Kevin Posted August 4, 2011 Members Report Posted August 4, 2011 The slaughter free leather came from Siegel. Kevin Quote
