Snap Posted June 20, 2008 Author Report Posted June 20, 2008 Thanks again for all of the interest! I am trying to get some more samples together to send out to those interested. To answer a few questions: - The die cast snaps will be offered with an empty top cavity and you will be able to customize that as you see fit- however you like. We only show the engraved plates on these as an example of what is possible. Leather looks really nice in there. - Pricing should be around $6.99 for singles. We will be offering price breaks for quantity purchases starting at a dozen. However, I don't want to discourage anyone who won't use that many, so we're trying to see what we can do for 6 piece orders as well. - I don't know the exact launch date but we're working hard at it. What we DON'T want to do is set a date and then fail to come through, or take orders before we have product in hand. - If there is enough interest, I am going to see about getting some of our pre production test product assembled and ready to go before the official launch. The pre-production snaps perform flawlessly but the finishes vary quite a bit in color and texture. The design of these is the same as the smaller snaps in the pictures. They differ from the production model in that they are a bit more square edged and heavier (1.1 oz if I remember correctly). I will try to post a picture tonight of the production sample I have which will show the final shape and the empty cavity. Thank you so much for the interest and all of the kind replies and messages! I will try my hardest to get some samples into the hands of those interested within a few weeks! And keep asking questions! I have not had much time to get on here this week but that I will always answer as soon as I can. Best, Ryan Quote
Snap Posted June 20, 2008 Author Report Posted June 20, 2008 Comparison of the pre-production model I refer to in my previous post and a raw casting of our final design of this version. I am willing and able to ship two sample sets of the pre-production version to anyone who is interested in seeing how these work in the real world. If interested PM your shipping address- no PO Boxes please as I prefer to ship UPS. I will try to get these out by the end of next week. Please keep in mind: While the samples function perfectly they are a bit hefty and not shaped as nicely as the production version (see pictures in this post). However, they should provide an excellent idea of what you can expect regarding function. Have a great weekend everyone! Ryan Quote
Snap Posted June 21, 2008 Author Report Posted June 21, 2008 To clear up some confusion- the samples (2 sets) mentioned in my last post are free of charge. If you want to check them out all I need is an address and I'll take care of the rest. Hey, that rhymes... Quote
howardb Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Brilliant idea Ryan! I hope this is huge for you. It's definitely one of those "now why didn't I think of that" products. Let us know when they are up for sale. Brent Quote Brent Howard CALG, HLG
Snap Posted June 26, 2008 Author Report Posted June 26, 2008 Samples are on the way for all who requested them! We (me and my co-workers) are interested in any and all feedback on these things regarding form, fit, function, pricing, etc. And we actually listen to what you have to say. On another note- I ordered a servo motor for my Juki yesterday! WOOHOO! I'm hoping it allows me to dial down the speed, and therefore the terror. Peace, Ryan Quote
Billy P Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 Hey Ryan, I got the snaps that you sent me yesterday. While I certainly haven't had time to use them on anything yet, I can already tell you that they are a good design. They may be a little heavy for somewhat smaller items I see a lot of use for them on everything from clutch purses on up to bags etc. I guess that a persons imagination would be the worst limitation to how to use the new snaps that you've come up with. It's really a good innovation to closures for leather things. I think that they will probably be finding places on other type things that we may not have even thought about yet. I want to thank you for sending them to me and I'll certainly be interested in getting some more later on. As soon as I decide what I'm going to use one on I'll post a picture so that you can see how it was used. One other thing, I was surprised at how tight the snaps lock in. At first I had a concern that they might not want to hold, because of their weight, but can already see that doesn't seem like it is going to be a problem. Again thanks and let me know when you start getting them out to sell. With regards Billy P Quote Billy P SideLine Leather Co. Leatherworker.net/Forum
Members Daemonworks Posted June 29, 2008 Members Report Posted June 29, 2008 Those look awsome. Any chance of there being a version that lets the end-user put their own tooled leather blanks into the face? Quote
Members charley Posted June 29, 2008 Members Report Posted June 29, 2008 These are a *great* idea! They look very nice. Funny ... I've been kicking around half a dozen belt buckle designs for the last ten years, although none of them look like what you have. I intended on metal casting/experimenting with the designs when I get my studio set up in the next house (sometime in the next year). You've really motivated me! Your flexible snap is a really good idea! I've concluded that the "standard" belt buckles are really pretty optimal, and the attachment mechanisms I've been working on are really more of a "novelty" or interesting thing from a creative or fashion standpoint (e.g., different attachment mechanisms allow for different kinds of belts, including belts that don't have to be sized to a specific person). I never thought about patenting, though. Should I think about that? --charley Quote
Members TomBanwell Posted July 9, 2008 Members Report Posted July 9, 2008 Hi Ryan, Thanks for sending the free samples. Indeed the preproduction ones are a bit heavy, and I look forward to the lighter version. I do have concern about the male end. It seems to fasten to the leather by just two thin metal prongs bent over. I would like to see a more secure method of securing it, as it seems too easy for those prongs to fail. Quote

As for the prongs- our research indicated a strong preference to prongs over screw type mounting. We have yet to have a failure of the prongs due to breakage and have literally hundreds of thousands of cycles on our test pieces. That being said, we are always looking for ways to improve and would like to hear your suggestions for an improved/preferred mounting method. Ryan Quote
