Rings Blue Guns For 1911's

I want to purchase a couple 1911 blue guns. I see there are Colt and Springfield Blue guns.

Can you use the Colt blue gun for a Springfield and vise versa? Which ones fit Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, Ed Brown and all the other 1911 manufacturers the best?

Does anyone have a list compiled?

Also, I have a Blackhawk 1911 railed version I picked up from LA Police gear. I believe I read somewhere someone on the board said it fits the Wilson Combat railed 1911 well. Does it fit other railed 1911's well?

I cannot speak for all of them, . . . but I can speak for one of the Springfield stainless models, . . . just too dad blamed big. I had a SA loaded some time back, . . . and at first I didn't quite understand why it didn't feel right in my hands, . . . and it was because it was slightly larger than my GI SA, . . . and my Rock Island 1911.

I've made holsters for a bunch of 1911's and so far that SA loaded with out the ambi safety is the only one that caused me any grief. It was the big one.

A "GI" spec 1911 is just that. Nearly all manfactures make one. The biggest difference is when it comes to the "double stack" like para with a full length dust cover or the "tactical" models with pickatinny rails.

They have 1, 2 or 3 slots. Springfields operator seems to be the most common configuration. Hope this helps

One thing to consider, when I mold a holster with rails, I dont mold the rail tight, especially don't mold the slots-you want to see retention!!

Some of the earlier production Springfield Armory pistols have oversized dust covers (even the "mil-spec" models), so any order for a SA pistol signals the need to check with the customer to be sure that you can fit a holster for his piece.

Some of the other differences between manufacturers will include overall slide profiles, ejection ports, grip safeties, and huge variations in thumb safeties, slide releases, and sights. Accessory rails will vary quite a bit from one brand to another. The rail on your Blackhawk dummy is one of the larger and longer varieties and will probably serve for most applications (note mncarpenter's comment about fitting around the accessory rail).

I have 5 or 6 dummies in the shop and my personal collection includes 28 pistols (from 1914 to recent vintage), but there are still "1911-style" pistols out there that I can't make holsters for. And, at the rate that new handgun models are being introduced, I suspect that there might be one or two more since I got up this morning.
