Heat Proofing Leather?

So, my girlfriend wants me to make her a hair straightener travel pouch from leather. Thing is, these get HOT (Up to 400ºF). Is this too hot for leather? If so, is there a thin lining material I could use for it? Thanks!

It's not too hot if you want to add pyro to the inside There's no reason why you couldn't make one Mat but surely your girlfriend could let it cool of a tad below 400o before she put it back into the pouch couldn't she? It's a travel pouch, which means it's traveling, not plugged in while she's using the travel pouch. I'm no expert on heat really and know that some people that make holsters dry them in the oven, but the leather is wet. I wouldn't put a piece of finished leather I cared about in the oven at 400. If you do it, try a lining of kryptomite. Seriously, I can't answer that as an absolute but i wouldn't do it. Cheryl

From the grump; As a rule of thumb --Don't get veg-tanned leather over 150 degrees - it'll do strange and nasty things ti it's self. Mike

There is a special heat resistant fabric that is used for this. I can't recall the name at the moment. People use it when making potholders and items like that. It has a silver side and a quilted side to absorb heat. I have seen it on cases that sometimes come with some of the straighteners. I don't know how well it would work with leather, perhaps someone else does.

Let the iron cool before putting it in the bag. Hot iron may damage the electrical cord too, so another reason to just be patient and let it cool.

Not to sound like I'm being dismissive, but this sounds like a non-issue. The kind of cases the flat irons come with are usually made from a woven nylon material, if they do come with one at all. It seems highly likely that it'll end up being cool, or cool enough, before traveling in any type of case anyway. You need to make a travel case, not a fireproof safe. Just make sure that it's not tossed in the case until it's had time to cool sufficiently, is all.
