Picked Up Some Tools

Recommended Posts

Talk to an old boy on Wednesday who has a few tools and stuff he was wanting to sell (as he put it, while he could still lift the boxes). Tried to get out of him exactly what he had... He suggested I "come look" cause I would not be sorry.. Here is a llist of the books (a little water damage on a few but still readable). 5 racks of tools, Knife, wallet, belt, cig lighter, key rings, buckels kits ... 9 sets of number / letter / image stamps sets...A home brew stitching pony, box with various hardware, snap sets, exacto knives, dobbers, dye, lace and I'm still going through the other box...

You found a good mine. Being a craftsman yourself, you're not going to turn around and sell these of course.

None of the books are super rare. The vast majority of them if not all are still printed. So on the high side $5 each would probobly be reasonable.

The alphabet sets go insane on ebay. The pic isn't good enough to tell if you have any of the rare ones, so $50 a set.

I'm not even going to guess at the hand stamps. Some of the resident vintage tool sellers should be able to give you an idea.

Rough guesstimate market value for the lot, $600 to a $1,000 depending on what the stamps are worth.

I believe the Ken Griffin Scrap Book has been out of print for some time. My 35 year old copy started falling apart, I found one used in good condition a year or so ago and had to spend $55.00 to get it.

If the tools are "pre letter" for identification they are a sharper image when stamped and do cost more when found for sale.

Check the values of everything. Offer to sell the items you don't want for him and give him the money.

Make the deal work for him too. Remember, it maybe you selling tools one day!

Good luck, it looks like a great find.

I wish the picture was larger... I am looking for an early Craftool F926

I would just make him a reasonable offer in a range that YOU feel comfortable with. He sounds like he wants to give you a deal.

He said he wanted them to go to someone who's use em.. I told him I would give them a good home....He told me his price was 300 firm and that he knew I was serious cause of the drive..... .. I am a happy camper and so was he.... Looking at some it stamps up closer today. They dont look like they have ever been struck.. Nothing for sale.. Once I get everthing sorted see what if any dups there may be... I just had to tell someone that would understand.... Thanks for the tip on Griffin, I'v never heard of him... It is in very good condition....

I found that creating a spreadsheet to catalog all the stamps also helped me keep an eye on duplicates. Since Excel has a column sorting feature, you just pick one up, type the number, repeat until finished, select the column, and tell it to sort.

After a certain point, you just can't seem to remember which ones you have and which you still need want to get.

Ken Griffin wrote a couple other books as well and was also involved in many of the doodle pages. His style is unique and you will recognize it after you get his book and see it someplace else. I like it as it is larger flowers and leaves then most other patterns in print. It is just a very cool look!

Good luck with your new toys!

As I was looking thru it this morning while counting craft tools (158 including two harley davidson made in tiwan). I see some that remind me of the "Sheridan" style circles and curves in there.... Rough math - tools at 3.00 each 462.00 in carving tools.. Now to just start useing them....

I like the excell idea. Would make it very organized / sorted... Thanks

Awesome score there...

I inherited most of mine and added to them as I can find them for reasonable prices. It seems that everyone is dumping them on eBay with meat-market like results. I like tools, but let's be realistic, I'm still a cheapskate. ;)

Good deal.

As with any barganing I have doen I give the price that I can afford. It may not be what the seller wants, but it is what I can afford. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. Someties the seller would prefer to see their tools go to a craftsman than going to a reseller, and will take a lower overall amount.Talking with them some, and explaining that you will be using the tools helps alot. I inherited my Mom's tools, and have added to it over the years with several purchases from folks getting out of the hobby, or selling off inherited tools. In each case we both were happy with the price I paid.

Once you get it all sorted out post some pictures for us.
