Needle And Bobbin Tension Is Driving Me Crazy

Ok, tonight I was trying to adjust tension to sew 2 pieces of 2-3oz veg tan together.

Using 138 thread, size 150 needle.

No matter how I adjust, the knot either appears on the top, or on the bottom.

I have already went through a whole bag of scraps to do this. Tomorrow I would actually need to cut pieces from the hide from testing.

This is getting crazy. I know its probably difficult to help without actually helping me adjust it. But just trying my luck.

I have double and triple checked my threading on the machine to make sure the thread goes into each tensioner properly.

You are a nut case! That's for sure. LOL Anybody using leather qualifies for that designation!

What machine are you trying (trying) to use??? That answer might!!! help the question.

This may help. Your size of thread may be a little large for that weight leather, consequently a smaller needle.

Is the thread between the tension discs or riding on the edge?

Have you been sewing this weight leather before, or just now?

Presser foot adjustment?

Just some possibilities.

I would try backing the tension all the way off and sew a few stitches see how it looks and tighten a little at a time if you need to. That's what i do if things get screwed up. Most of the time when i get it set for the thinness i'm going to sew it is fine for anything thicker.

Sometimes hard to really tell where the knot actually is on thin stuff. Use white thread on one side and black thread on the other side. Then you can tell for sure. If your needle size is too large, the leather doesn't grab onto the thread, so makes it harder to adjust tension.

I go along with your thread being too big. Think of it this way, the thread is about the same thickness as one ply of the leather you are sewing, four pieces of thread have to fit into the hole the needle makes,there just isn't enough room.
