If there's anybody in western Canada who has an old one they'd part with, let me know. Thanks, Terry Hello. I actually had the same problem on monday I stepped on mine and broke it into two pieces. I couldnt wait a week to get a new one so I took a old sewing machine needle and cut half way through it at the bottom were you thread it at so it forms a hook. then I took it to the rouge wheel and smoothed all the rough edges so it doesnt cut the thread. It will work in a pinch. but you can buy one out of springfield leather.

Hda Report post Posted September 14, 2012 Can someone explain how you stich the cantle with a hook needle. I always do it with an awl and 2 needles but I´m curious how it´s done.
lottarope Report post Posted October 3, 2012 Ken, I can't locate one in the weaver catalog. Maybe I'm missing it, got a page number? Anybody, I have tried modifying a lacing awl and sewing machine needles with little luck. They like to pull out of the handles or the modified eye/hook wants to bend. I've got a modified sewing machine epoxying in an antler handle right now see how that works. If somebody had a wore out Landis hook needle I sure would appreciate one. dirtclod Report post Posted October 3, 2012 What you want to look for is a needle for a needle and awl machine. If you look in the Union Lock Stitch machine needles you should find in Weavers catalog.
lottarope Report post Posted October 5, 2012 Yikes! $34.95. of course thats a package of ten but I've no use for ten. They also come in four sizes. Any body willing to sell one? Any ideas on which size would be best?
PcCowboy Report post Posted June 4, 2013 Adler needles are hooks. Those are what I use in my handles (red handle)with no problems. A package of 10 are like a little over $10 at Weavers. Or get them one at a time at "Panhandle Leather" in Amarillo Texas.
PcCowboy Report post Posted June 4, 2013 Can someone explain how you stich the cantle with a hook needle. I always do it with an awl and 2 needles but I´m curious how it´s done. It's like welting a boot. Make a hole, pull the thread where half is on one side and half on the other. Make another hole, stick in the hook grab the thread and pull it out the other side without pulling all of it. Pull just enough to make a loop. Pull the thread on that side thru the loop. Now pull the loop back to the other side of the cantle, stopping about the center of the work. Then do it all again pulling everything tight as you go alone without pulling the loop out of the work. Hope this word picture is understandable.
rufusjames Report post Posted June 4, 2013 I broke my only one in the middle of stiching a cantle. Tandy does not carry them anymore here in Albuquerque. I did not want to wait for shipping either. i ended up thinking maybe a shoe repair shop could at least tell me if there was any place local that had them. He ended up having 10 and was more than happy to sell me two for a dollar over his cost. Made my day. Check with your local shoe guy, you may get lucky.
